So took the new ride to the dealership for the first oil change and tire rotation. Picked up the truck, got home and to my surprise one of my wheel hub cover on my new F@$%#$g wheels is gone!!!!! When they did the tire rotation they did not tighten up the wheel hub covers and one must have come loose on my way home, and another was hanging on by one bolt..... unbelievable. So then i think to myself, i better make sure they put the damn oil plug back and im not running on empty.... i get under the truck and the oil filter housing has oil seeping through through it.... see pics below. This is my first ever new vehicle, I've always had used and out of warranty and done all the oil changes myself. i have a 100k powertrain warranty, how can i do the oil changes myself and not ruin my warranty????

Just self report oil changes on your toyota owners page, I skipped the dealer oil changes too because they can’t be bothered to not overtighten the filter

Doing oil changes yourself does not void Toyota warranty. Make sure to keep records of time/mileage when you do them and the oil/filter receipt in case they ask for it for warranty claims.

i knew a guy that would keep every oil receipt, log the mileage and would even keep a small vial from each oil change.

I’d bet that the oil on your filter cap isn’t leakage, just some sloppy seconds the lube “tech” couldn’t be bothered to wipe off. At least it looks like the filter was changed.

The wheel center cap thing is a load of crap though, go back and raise the issue. Just remember that the people that can make things right aren’t directly the ones who made it wrong.

I thought that at first, wiped everything clean, went to work and came home and this is how it is after wiping it all clean yesterday.

I wish I was surprised by this but of course it seems pretty much theway it works these days.

I took my Land Cruiser in for an Oil Change and they told me I would need a new drain plug and to rethread the pan for it too.
So I paid to have them do this and of course the next day the oil was on the garage floor.

I took it to my regular mechanic to fix and had to endure his reminding me why he was there in the first place and have never gone back and never will.
This is a dealer that I work for when they need what I do too and I thought I was part of the family really and maybe I am?

A Frickin Oil Change, not Rocket Surgery except to them evidently.

The dealer would have had heck to pay if they did this to me. I never ever have any dealer or anyone do my oil changes. I know I won't F it up doing it myself.

Well I don't use them anymore and they do not use me anymore either for anything.

They have never had service like I gave them and never will.

Always amazing how the people who are "qualified" can fuck up such a low skill job. Dealership probably has signs in the stalls for how to wipe their ass too.

I have to ? the qualified part. Although I think it is not that they are not but just under pressure to turn vehicles. To me it comes from the top down. That is what I told the service manager at the dealer that did my last free oil change. He said he had another meeting after my email and instructed them to use their torque wrenches. He also said he told them about proper torque for oil filter covers. There is really no need to even get out the torque wrench just snug them up. Follow the old rule. Hand tight and another 1/8 to 1/4 turn. I am thinking they have 1/2" torque wrenches set to max.

Most dealers that I have known use "Kids" that they pay minimum wage to do Oil Changes and it shows.

It is all about how many they can bill in a day period.

For those that did their first change themselves, how tight was the filter? Were you able to remove without issues? I’m afraid that thing is gonna be mega-torqued from the factory.

This is exactly why I have been changing my own oil for the past 30+ years. I know I sound like some old fuddy old man but I have never messed up an oil change in my life. I took auto shop when i was 14 and kept taking the vocational education classes because my mom told me that those skills I will use all my life. After a couple of years at community college, I decided to do more and enlisted in the Air Force. My ASVAB scores were high enough that I was allowed to pick my career. I liked helicopters so I ended up being a crew chief on HH-60g's. I still change my oil at 47 years old even though I could have taking it in a long time ago.

Also a good idea to take a picture of the odometer, print it, and staple the rcpts to it.

No problem. Lots of people here recommend doing your first change at 1K to remove the factory oil after the break-in period is complete. Mine at 700 miles/9 Months was pretty dirty. Good luck.
