Talk some sense into me.

So I've owned my double cab for about 16 months. I special ordered it to my liking, and have done a few small mods (as well as line-xed the bed). I bought it because my son's car seat wouldn't work in my AC tacoma. Now that my son is in a bit larger car seat and my wife talking about #2, I'm wondering about space. We do have a 4runner as well, but I know we will use my truck with all 4 of us as well. I do like having a 6.5' bed, but I will be honest, it's not like I'm using it all of the time.

Anyways, I hate vehicle payments, and the plan was to pay this one off in 3 years total and keep it for the long haul. However, part of me wonders if a Crewmax would have been a better bet, but I'm worried I would miss the bed size even if it's just a piece of mind having it in case. Not to mention I would be trading in a 16 month old vehicle.

So, am I being irrational? Thoughts?

 

I traded in a 22 month old truck and made out very well, so I wouldn't worry about that. Back seat vs bed size is a question only you can answer. As a CM owner, I can tell you your kids will have much more room as they grow bigger and out of car seats, especially if you're keeping it for the long haul. The longer bed would be nice, but I use my back seat with my family of 4 way more than I have ever needed a longer bed.

 

I may be the wrong guy or right guy to answer this depending on how you like my answer.

I HAD the Tacoma Double cab and with 2 kids I needed to go larger. We looked at the double cab Tundra but it seemed to only offer about 3" more space than the Taco, which wasn't enough. CrewMax has given us PLENTY of space and while I was used to the 6' bed of the Taco, the 5.5' bed of the Crewmax due to it's depth and width, seem to carry everything we need when camping even better than the 6' did. Now quality of life INSIDE the cab is better, which makes long trips that much more enjoyable.

We currently have a Rav4 as our second vehicle but we are switching to t he 4Runner once it arrives due to the similar findings of the Taco vs Tundra.

We also now have 2 large breed dogs, and they ride very comfortably in the CrewMax, and will ride well in the Runner once we have it.

So I'd vote, comfort and quality of family life and get the Crew.

I say....trade it in for a CM.....better yet wait for the 18 to get the LED HEADLIGHTS and all the safety features...

 

Yeah, I pay around $120 extra a month. Just afraid I'll take a huge hit.

 

You'll do fine with a DC. Plenty of families out there with smaller cars and more kids and they make it work. Would the extra space be nice? Sure. But do you really need at this moment? Once your kids' feet kit the back of your seat you can reconsider, but for now, not something I would worry about. I had 3 kids in my Taco. Not as much space as the Tundra, but it worked.

 

How do you arrange the two kids and two large breed dogs? Can they fit on the floor comfortably?

I have a lab and a golden and hope to have a kid on the way this year and when I get my truck it will see a second god willing.

 

With the resale value on these things I'd be surprised if you took a hit at all. I bought my CM used from a private party and he got what he was asking and he only had it ~8-9 months. He got a check for the difference of what I paid and what he owed for like 4-5k, if I remember correctly. Granted he may have paid more extra each month than you but the resale on these things is stupid high. You'll come out fine....go for the CrewMax.

 

I had my 4Runner TRDPro for two years when I traded for my Tundra. I didn't take a hit, but I did reset the loan clock. I needed a bigger vehicle for my family. Sure I could have made it work with the 4Runner but comfort is key and I don't regret the purchase.

In regards to bed size it's a trade off. I'm good with the shorter bed, because it's the only way to get the Crew Max.

I say do what makes you happy and what makes the most sense for your family.

 

My 18 year old son is 6'5", 260 and is happy with the dc as long as he's not sitting behind me! Way more room than my 1st gen access cab. Of course I have to have the bedrooms space. My dream truck would be a cm with the 6.5 bed. Come on Toyota, they've got the frame, DC 8' bed.It's just the bean counters saying they wouldn't sell enough. I think they're wrong.

 

Gotta love the smart phone. That's supposed to say bed space!

 

Ok..Sooo not helping, haha. It's Ok. I'll have to weigh my options I suppose. Maybe go test drive another one.

 

Hey, I tried to keep you in what you have now

 

Get the 2018 trd sport and let's us know how it is.

 

You are in no rush to make the move.....keep DC for now.....pregnancy is nine months.......and baby is in small car set for around the first year....you are farther from needing the truck than you think.........I just moved to a 14 CM cause my kids are 7,4,4....yes twins......moved up from a 2012 Taco double cab and know I made the right choice.......make the move when you NEED to not because you MIGHT need to.

You will know when to make the move.......plus it does seem each model year they add a few goodies.

 

I think Toyota should make the double cab about 2" longer and the crew max about 3" shorter.
I will definitely stay with my double cab because aint no freakin way i am giving up my 8' bed.

No way i could even get by with a 6.5' bed.

 

Our ShepardxCollie likes to either sit on the floor in front of one of my kids, or he'll rest himself on the center arm console with his head, so I can still see out the rear window while he can watch the front.
Our second she's a HeelerxLab, she prefers to mainly sit between the kids or sits on the floor in front of my other Son.

 

If Toyota released a Crew Max with a 6' or 6.5' bed, my truck would be at the dealer being traded without a second thought.

 

Had a 2010 Tundra 5.7 DC for 6 years and was paid off, started having tranny problems so I traded for a 2016 Tacoma TRD Off Road DC, boy did I miss the room of the Tundra DC and my old Tundra so after 6 months of owning the new Tacoma I wasn't happy!

I found my perfect truck now, just like Goldie locks and the 3 bears! Just right, 2017 Tundra CM 5.7 4X4, love it and never looked back. I thought I would miss the 6' bed because I do a lot of home improvement DIY stuff, but I found this

As for the room, way bigger then the DC both Tacoma and Tundra, my daughter says when she looks back from PAX seat its like it keeps going and she likes that the rear pax isn't right in your face from the front!

I had same predicament, I had a low mileage crew cab seirra, then 2 kids later we were crammed, got the crew max and never looked back, so much room its incredible, I hated the short bed idea but frankly I have only thrown groceries into it. You won't be dissapointed

 

you can always rent a trailer if you really need that much more bed space than the crew max has to offer. With the tailgate down you have about 7ft of length, so 8 foot lumber hangs out a bit, no big deal, you would have the tailgate down in a DC too.

 

If only it didn't cost $11,000 to have swap a 6.5 ft bed onto a CM...

Thanks, guys. I've all but convinced myself not to do it. I contacted a few online sales managers from local dealers asking for pricing, and none have responded in over a week. We live in a really poor service area in terms of dealers. It brings back the nightmare that was my buying experience. I don't feel like going through that all again for more debt. I'll just ride it out as is.

 

Cabin comfort is important for family makes the kids, wife happy. Yes it's a little more than a double cab but you'll end up loving it and all the double cab owners envy wishing they poneyed up for the crew max. Plus if you need more bed space that's what the "bed extenders tail gate" is for, best of both worlds.
