Hey all, I'm currently driving a 2wd 2nd gen tacoma. I recently moved to a place where I need 4wd and I'm looking towards getting a tundra. Would you guys recommend a 1st or 2nd gen? I'm mechanically inclined, and plan on modding the truck in the future. Whatever I buy I plan on keeping for a long time (had the tacoma for 7 years), and will be taking good care of it. I don't tow, occasionally haul, and would like a comfortable backseat for long trips. Maybe turning it into an expedition rig in a couple years. I'm hoping to sell my tacoma for 13k, so that would be my max spending price.I've been doing all the maintenance on my gfs 3rd gen 4runner and I love the simplicity of working on these trucks.
Any advice on what years, what to look for, price ranges, would be appreciated. Thanks!

Budget allowing, I'd say 2nd gen cuz of the 5.7, chain cam.

1st gen is 4.7 (largest) with a belt cam. 1st gens starting in '05 have vvt-i for an extra 40 ponies and torque.

So if 'price is no object' 2nd (or as some say 3rd gen 15+).

I love my 3rd gem runner too, sitting at 325k, all original drivetrain and so on. But my 15' sequoia with the 5.7 gets better mileage and 200 more HP-s and torque!

    Luck deciding and enjoy.
