If buying a new one the maker will know based on the door configuration of the truck and year.
If buying one used then you need to measure to the outside edge of the cab side of the bed, this is the spot you need covered to avoid water inside and of course the tailgate too.

    Is this enough info?

You measure from the back of the bed outside on the cab end and to the outside of the tailgate on the other.

There needs to be a flat surface on the underside of the shell for weatherstripping to seal against some part of the bed all the way around.

Are you trying to fit a used top??????

OK well like I said when you select the make, year and model of the car the maker will know the actual bed length already.

This is what they do and there are not too many variables there when buying a new one.

In fact I have never seen a makers website that did not walk you right through the process with pictures of the different possibilities for bed length and I think there are only 3 of them too.
