Does my tundra have a factory amp or does the HU power the speakers?

So I’ve been looking to adding a subwoofer and I’ve looked and looked over threads to help me find my stock amp but no luck. It’s a Non-JBL. Anybody have any idea?

 

Looks like double cabs can come with one or not. If it has one its under the passenger front seat.

 

If you have an SR5, you have an amp under the front passenger seat. The headunit powers the shitty speakers on the dash. The shitty amp powers the 4 shitty speakers on the doors. You will need a sound processor or LOC at a minimum to add a sub and amp.

Hey @Danman34 - I’m in the middle of planning the replacement of these OEM amp and speaker components in my truck. Do you know any of the specs on the factory amp with this very distinctive brand name ‘Shitty’?

 

No amp under the seat?
Is there anything under the passenger seat?

Sure, it produces minimal wattage to power OEM 2-ohm door speakers.
It's a POS.



Use one of these and you won't have to cut any OEM wiring.

One more thing;
Buy the best front door components you can afford.
Get the JBL door sails and mount your tweeters in them.
Disconnect all 3 dash speakers, just unplug the side speakers, they feed the DVC center.
And don't forget you'll need spacers/adapters to fit your aftermarket speakers in the doors.

Why waste money on new sails? Just use a hole saw and drill holes in the ones you have.

 

Because I want to be pretty and flat.
The JBL sails angle the tweeter more towards in the inside of the cab.

Stock sails have a curve to the face.
A flat tweeter mounted in them looks like shit..

 

The Infinity tweeters I have are adjustable. I have them angled towards me.

 

I'm overwhelmingly and ecstatically excited that the stock door sail met your needs.
They didn't meet mine.

 

I recently replaced the amp under the seat and the door speakers and added a hideaway sub. The upgrade was well worth it!

I kept the factory head unit and I have the amp set for "high line level". Is that the right setting if you reused the factory amp input wiring?

I ask because I have a bit of white noise when the volume is low.

 

Yes that is correct..
Make sure your amp has a good ground.
Make sure to get good ground contact to an unpainted surface.
If I remember correctly the stock amp had its own ground bolt to the body.

Make sure you used a big enough power wire gauge from the battery for your amp.

You might need to make some gain adjustments on your amp.

I've learned a lot from him and his videos are well made.
He dumbs it down without making one feel dumb...

 

I went ahead and paid for his consultation services. I used the Crutchfield tools and somehow got the right speakers, but the amp and subwoofer, I was completely lost. He was able to get me straightened out in a day.

 

Thanks for the tips. I may have an issue with chassis ground of the amp being tied to the same place the ground cable is connected.

 

Not sure if anyone is watching this thread any longer but here it goes...
I've got a SR (base model, like a "fleet" vehicle) not a SR5. I don't think I have a amp. The only thing under the passenger seat is a small (approx 8" x 3" ish) cylinder shaped black thing with two sets of wire coils attached. Sure doesn't look like an amp. If no amp, what is my easiest and least expensive option to get any audio sound improvement?

I also have a base level 2012 Tundra (with the Texas package added). It seems like the wiring under the passenger seat is for potential power seats in the future (heatingcooling as well). Not sure if any of the wiring under that seat has anything to do with the amp leads. I installed an android head unit that I thought would resolve the speakers not working right. Same thing after install. I got full sound from passenger door and a little from the dash, and no back door sound at all....... I am guessing I will just be adding new speakers with new wiring to ensure everything works.

I am hoping that someone who has gone through this already will share their wisdom. I snapped a picture of the wiring from under the passenger seat.

I will most likely buy the Kenwood set which fits well based on some youtube videos.

I also have the exact same issue with my 2013 Crew Max, Non JBL sound system and the only speakers working are the passenger door & passenger dash tweeter. Nothing from the rear speakers or from the drivers side. I replaced the head unit & still have the same issues. If you found a solution, I would love to hear about it. It's driving me crazy!

 

I installed the Kenwood set from Amazon. After installing new wiring from the new head unit, everything was good. I didn't do the back doors, so in the future I may need to rearrange things.

I should have tried to trace the wiring and look for a short. The way this stock wiring works, is the head unit sends signal to the dash speaker, then from there another line goes from the dash speaker to the front door speaker. So if any part of that series has an issue, then neither speaker will work. There also could be a small amp hiding somewhere, but I kind of doubt Toyota would spend more money for that.
