My 07 came with Nitto Trail Grap M/T's. Didn't like them at all but that's for a different thread. I had a slow leak on the driver side rear. Got tired of that sh*t and went to Discount Tire. I noticed a commotion going on and a couple tire techs were taking pics of the tire. Service Manager told me to come over and have a look. The lining inside of the tire was bulged out. A big bubble. A large part of a freakin wire coat hanger had punctured the "inner" wall and protruded enough into the tire to cause a slow leak from the inside....WTF????

Tire shop pulled this out of the right rear KO2 on my Tacoma. Patched, no issues.

I worked at a tire plant for some time. That sounds impressive. The butyl rubber inside the tire is the only thing holding air in. Its a very thin lining. We are talking like less than ¼ of a millimeter. The other rubbers used in tires are porous, and do not hold air well.

If your steel bands had worked through, and poked a tiny hole in it that would have been enough for the inner lining to bubble up like you said.

Agreed. It seems to have gone in at an angle. If they dismount the tire, they will see where the hole is, and put a patch on it. In my earlier days, I did patches and plugs for straight line holes. They hold up well.
As DSLKSL said, you can put a tube in it too.
