I leased my 20 for 3 years to see what the next gen brings and kinks that come with it for the Tundra....but far as I know for the 21 MY forward there will still be a V8 option, but Dec 21 model is the rumored release of the Hybrid Tundra with a a whirly spinny whistlely thingy V6. Heard from my salesman at Toyota who I buy from.....which is why I got into the lease (plus the deals are crazy right now for leases on 2020 SR5 CMs).

I hated the mileage on my 12, I'm happy my 20 so far (only 300 miles on it yet) seems to be getting 2-3 MPG better than my 12, but a hybrid option with a healthy reliable turbski V6 would be nice to see in my opinion.

This is true but this twin turbo v6 techno wonder is not a new motor. It's out now in a Lexus and will have plenty of reliability. The thing will also be 400 plus hp. I think the other option will be this motor teamed to a hybrid system, the v8 is gone. All Tundras will sound like Raptors now.... lame.

The other thing that has me puzzled is that the new chassis will be shared with the Tacoma. So the Tacoma is gonna have one helluva strong chassis for a midsize I'm guessing.

A buddy bought his daughter a Mustang with a V6 and took it to the exhaust shop. They told him upfront not to expect it to sound like a V8 because a 6 never will never have the V8 rumble.

I like V8 but I don't hate V6 either. What I would hate to see in Tundra is direct fuel injection. That would be a deal breaker.

    It is direct injection

    https://www.thedrive.com/new-cars/2...-twin-turbo-v-6-crushes-the-hybrid-powertrain

    https://jalopnik.com/the-twin-turbo-v6-in-the-lexus-ls-500-is-a-legit-v8-rep-1827805843

Pretty sure this is gonna be the one that goes in the Tundra. Toyota has been doing this lately. Look at the Tacoma with the Camry/mini van V6. This engine in a truck totally sucks.

But it decreases tooling and development to make a motor that transcends segments. Sucks for truck owners. But maybe the twin turbo techno wonder motor will have low end torque.

I’m sure it will have good power, but in a truck I prefer reliability over performance. I still am hoping for a V8, this is not an official announcement.

Maybe HINO will offer a basic pickup truck in America, something that pickup truck lovers can actually use for work. I'm sure the 3rd gen Tundra will be nice for driving around, but I don't think the TTV6 will hold up in a work truck used like Americans use work trucks.

My TRD Pro is not a daily driver. I have a need to haul lumber (woodworking) on occasion - did it in my 2008 4Runner for 10 years (back glass rolled down). May tow something one day. Don't give a shit about gas - bought it because I liked it. And, my wife said my cod sack was pretty big before the truck. LOL...all kidding aside, man, I agree with you. Too many ladyboys around these days.

They will not share a chassis. They will share a platform. It's two different things. It means they will share a lot of components but chassis will be different, just like the body panels are different.

Put all that money you'll save with that 6cyl in a piggy bank. That way when your truck starts hard starting due to the carbon build up your can pay your repair bill on your DI 6cyl turbo.

    Makes sense :monocle:

My 5.7 hauls ass over the divide on I-70. Hauls ass on any grade here in CO. My tunny doesn't know what a slow lane is. My 07 was full of rock going up LaVeta Pass. Had to back off at the top. I was stunned actually.

Here is the most likely candidate for the next Tundra engine, the V35A-FTS, which uses D4S, which is port and direct injection to avoid that specific issue:

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Dynamic_Force_engine

I think it will be fine but I’m just a yuppie that doesn’t use my truck for manly work very often.

If it performs anything like the 3.5 Ecoboost it’s going to be make some great power, the sound does suck but they can pump anything they want through the speakers I guess... something else to bitch and moan about.

Personally, I love V8’s and if they really want to give us what we want, put twin turbos on the V8, then we would have something and I would pay extra for it. I’d be willing to give up some longevity for the fun and power. Now trading longevity for a nearly equal amount of fun and power, the gaining a horrible exhaust not? No thanks.

I might have to find a gently used 5.7 at a junk yard to keep as a replacement when needed...

I think Ford was smart to go with a 7.3 Gas in their SuperDuty. Who knows about the reliability though. If Toyota would make a no frills CM with a 6.5 bed for under $30k they would own the truck market! I don’t need it to compete with sports cars or get excellent MPGs, just be reliable for a long time!

As much as I'd like to criticize removing the V8, my fleet v6 turbo Ford Expedition for work absolutely halls ass, and would smoke my Tundra while getting better gas mileage. I've never towed with it, but I believe the tow rating is pretty high.

I just want something reliable and capable. If they can also give us better fuel economy than we've been getting, so much the better. I'm not tied to a V8 in a truck but I'm not going to buy a TTV6 for hauling and towing - even from Toyota - until it's proven that it can last. Both GM and the Super Duty are sticking with big NA OHV engines because of their durability and better fuel economy under load than OHC.

Regardless of the rating, you can't really tow more than about 8000 lbs with any halfton safely anyway.

I don't understand why they don't offer a CM standard box now. Should ride on the same frame as a DCLB and they already have all the body pieces they need.

"Remember, the time to think of having a V8 is before you had something else". They even knew it wood relate to Toyota back in this 1977 veg juice commercial.

I must be an outlier within the Tundra world. To me, a pickup (or any vehicle) is a functional tool. I could care less how it sounds. If it can get better fuel economy, I think that's the environmentally responsible thing to do. If you want to tow and haul heavy all the time, you'd be better served with a 3/4 ton diesel. I've owned three vehicles that have/had turbos. Two diesels and a Volvo. Collectively, there are/were 700k miles on the engines without touching the turbos.

Edit: I don't even know what a cod sack is? What does that have to do with the functionality of a pickup?
