Honestly I don't get the hate for FI V6 motors or hybrid systems. Properly designed and executed they will be better than a NA V8 with similar reliability for the downside of requiring a more knowledgeable and competent tech for repairs and some of the maintenance. The "V8 cause that's what trucks have" mindset is keeping us from making progress to motors that will provide more power and return less fuel usage. It's just as backwards as wishing our engines were carbureted because that's how all trucks were before. Toyota at least has a track record of producing reliable and well thought out powertrains that deliver on performance and longevity so I've no idea why it's such an abhorrent idea to this group.

Would you stick your nose up if Toyota suddenly offered a V6 turbo diesel for the Tundy just because it wasn't a V8?

Yup. The only way you get high mileage in the turbos is on older diesels before the EPA strangled them, or on things like a boxer 4 (looks at WRX) that don't have the same load and gearing as a truck.

You can easily get high mileage on turbocharged engines currently if they are designed and built properly. Modern fuel controls and materials can easily handle it. Have you seen modern Toyota turbo motors failing frequently? Would it make you all more comfortable if they downsized the 3UR to 3.5-4.0l and then added the turbos even if it got worse mileage than a new V6 build?

I’m optimistic that Toyota can do it well with the TTV6. That being said I have a lease on my 2020 Tundra so I have 3 years to see how it works. If I’m not impressed I’ll keep my V8

Anyone know if the TTV6 has cam towers? Could be a game changer and help Toyota bigly if it doesnt.

This is something I need to know (cause I do I-70 and it blows). Forced induction is still sucking thinner air. So are you saying that forced induction squeezes so much in that it compensates for the lower oxygen content, effectively negating the altitude issue? Surely if you start behind the 8-ball due to altitude, FI may add some but the result will be proportionately reduced compared to the sea level result. o_O

Well said. Like all the threads on this forum with people bitching about gas mileage. I mean seriously? What the f*** did you think you were buying.

People who try to stretch out their oil changes with a turbo charged engine will find out just how expensive replacing a turbo will be. Turbos can’t take dirty oil. They spool up to something like 80,000 plus RPM’s. Before I bought my tundra, I looked at the F-150 with the 5.0L. Dealer kept pushing me to an ecoboost. He asked why I didn’t want the ecoboost engine. I told him he knew why I didn’t want a turbocharged engine haha. The more complex they make the engine, the more it will cost to keep running.

I don't care anymore. I was only interested in a turbo diesel.

These V8's are proven. It'll take some time to see how these turbo'd V6's shake out.

In the meantime, I'd wager our V8's hold onto their value longer if they're dropped from Toyota's line up.

200,000 miles from now I'll still be driving mine. I put 300k mi. my last Tacoma. Blah blah blah....

Pretty soon the only way to get a V8 in a truck will be if the GVWR is over 8500 pounds...

I'll still keep my 2013 until it rusts into the ground. But maybe in a couple of years when they work out the kinks, I might look at getting and additional tundra. I like the idea of being able to have a "tuned" twin turbo. Probably a lot of fun to drive!

Meh, I’m sure it will be fine. I would have liked to have seen direct injection on an updated V8 as it’s a gem of an engine but you can’t have everything.

Was talking to a guy at the gas station who works for Bodine and he said the V8 is gone, he thinks after the 2020 year but issues may push it to after 2021.
