Bed Extender question for 1st Gen 2001 Tundra

I want to install a Bed Extender and read through all the online posts and still a little confused which ones works with my 1st Gen 2001 Tundra.
1) AMP Research brand says 74811 Bed Extender with 74605 Mounting Brackets.
2) I've also seen OEM Toyota different kinds PT392-34000 (with

$61 PT329-34070-BR Strap Retainer Kit

PT329-34070-BR bracket) or PT392-34100 (with PT329-34101 mount).

Which kind is the U (not V) shape bed extender?
Which kind is the drill-less mounts? I think the AMP I have to drill but not Toyota OEM.
Also, are the bed extenders and mounting brackets interchangeable? For example, can I buy Toyota drill-less mounts to use with AMP bed extender?
Can I buy any brand bed extender?

Again, I am asking for 1st Gen Tundra, I've seen a lot of posts for future Gen Tundras.

I have the oem Toyota one in my Tacoma. It’s a u shape. It’s adjustable to fit the tundra too. I believe the mounts for the tundra are just like the Tacoma and go between the bed and rope hooks

 

Do you mind sharing the Part Number for both mounts and bed extender if you have? And also photos would really appreciate it!

So are you saying the 1st Gen Tacoma extender will adjust wider to fit the 1st Gen Tundra?

 

Supposedly it does. I have yet to try it

 

What do people use bed extenders for? Contemplating if I should get one.

 

Anything longer than the bed. More useful on my taco vs my tundra. But you can also use it to seperate things at the back of the bed from the rear

 

Very useful If you buy any building materials for projects around the house, lumber, doors, etc.

Also, useful for any camping trip I've ever done.

 

I just scored this one for $140, not a scratch on it.

This one is expandable, the vertical supports in the center unscrew (clamshell style) and you can widen the bars, then reclamp the supports.

These newer AMP research ones look and feel like high quality parts.

I actually gave mine away last September. I will say that had I not added my topper I would have kept it. It was handy as a tie down mechanism. I kept things from moving around because I could run a bungee cord from the existing tie down location to anywhere on this extender. Mine must have been OEM as it had brackets that didn't require any additional drilling.

I had an extender on my 02 and have been annoyed not having it on my 06. That's too bad that it interfered with your topper, no way to have modified it?

 

The issue is that when moving the extender back and forth it would wack the window strut for my back glass. I could force it, but it wasn't great for it. The other issue is that I couldn't load my dogs back there with it in place. I do miss it sometimes.

 

but doesn't the gaps cause things to slip through them and fall off the back of the truck like lumber and doors? that's why i've wondered why they aren't fully enclosed

Never have had that happen. Lumber mostly stays put from what I've experienced. If it's lighter weight wood like fence boards, I use a cam strap to cinch the boards together as well.

Not if you tie it down. I would never rely solely on the bed extender.

 

I used to have the Toyota one. I used to pack too much stuff so would fold the extender down. Lost it on a trail near Big Bear. It doesn’t do well off-road with a lot of bouncing and jarring. With the cloud if dust and the noise of all the gea4 banging around I never noticed till I stopped. Went back and never found it

 

I finally bought a used bed extender, now looking for the no drill brackets that screw into the tie down anchors. Are PT329-34070-BR the right no drill brackets that I need? Do they work with 1st gen Tundras? I'm confused because same P/N looks different at Sparks vs Amazon. Also I can't tell from the Sparks photo if it wraps around so that it can bolt to the tie down anchors.

Thanks to empty_lord, I bought the right no drill brackets for the 1st gen Tundra.
On the other hand, seems I bought the wrong bed extender, this one is actually for 2nd/3rd gen Tundra I believe.
For small objects, this leaves me a gap that things can fall out from.
On the plus side, for larger objects, it gains an additional 3-4 inches.

 

Seems like it fits pretty good other then the length. You could fabricate a filler plate or something.

 

If anyone has a factory extender, or just the factory brackets for the double cab can you post a pic please?
I want an extender in my 06 DC
I have the extender and OE brackets from my 01 Tacoma, and I can modify the brackets to fit if I have to.
The extender itself seems like it's not tall enough.

I had the same problem on my 01 tacoma when I put a cap/camper/topper on it.
I modified the extender "pegs" that go in the brackets. Worked great. I used it for 3 or 4 years before I sold the truck. I have the extender still. I'll post a pic of the modified peg. In case you want to give it a try.
