I use Zeps or Simple Green (any concentrated APC will do) in three separate bottles (50:1, 30:1, 3:1) and a cup of Dawn dish soap/water with detail brushes. Just be careful with certain APC's on aluminum as it'll scour it. Here's a TT V6 BMW X5 I did the other day with the aforementioned products. Wiped down with Aerospace 303 and it was good to go (didn't get a final shot, ran out of daylight).

I just used Griots engine cleaner and a high pressure washer. I stayed high and swept back and forth. It came out great. I didn’t cover anything and I didn’t have any issues. It did make me a little nervous not covering anything..

If I'm not mistaken, Simple Green HD is the one to use (it's purple) because it's the one that's safe to use with aluminum.

    found this:
Simple Green has also developed break-through water based cleaners that are safe for use on metals, plastics, rubber and high tech alloys. Extreme Simple Green Aircraft & Precision Cleaner, Pro Series Simple Green Automotive Cleaner, and Simple Green Pro HD are available on both the industrial and retail markets, respectively. These products were initially developed for the aircraft industry and extensive testing shows that they are safe and effective on a variety of metals and other sensitive surfaces even in the most extreme circumstances.

I know many people recommend putting a plastic bag or aluminum foil over the alternator when washing an engine bay.

It seems like the alternator on one of my trucks is right next to the road. I don’t really understand how the alternator getting some water on it during the wash would be much different than driving on the highway in the rain. I’m not using a pressure washer either, just spraying on some non-corrosive cleaner and gently rinsing off.

    Can someone explain this?

I just did mine with Super Clean. Came out pretty good for the first time. Could have used a few more brushes but it worked well enough.
