Hey all, is it normal for my rack to be moving when I turn the steering wheel?

Steering rack? The steering rack should not move in its mounts but it does move hydraulically to assist in turning.

So without actually measuring it, it looks like it is moving 1/4 to 1/2" in the mounts.

Could be the rack is shot ---especially with bigger tires---sometimes can be cured with these...we change out about 2 a month. Usually 35" tires plus a 100k mileage is the recipe for the stock bushings to wear down faster.

Actually mine is doing the same thing! I was quoted $300 for installation of new poly bushings and an alignment. I have 35 inch tires.

How hard are these to install? Can you reach them easily or have to remove a lot of stuff?

Would also like more info. Saw some mixed info on install. I have the bushings waiting to be installed but have looked over the job a couple times and haven’t wanted to start it.

I know you need a set
Of pickle forks to get old bushings out.

It's a pita, but can be done, if you have the right tools for the job, and persistence. Oem bushing are two halves, upper and lower. Remove rack bolts, remove steering wheel spline input shaft bolt to have more freedom of movement of rack. I use straps to pull rack forward for more room to work and pounding. Lower bushing, I used open end wrench ground down to look like a tie rod removal tool. Lots of pounding on bushing to wedge it out. Not easy to remove, rusted oem sleeved bushing. Once popped out, use my old tire iron, aka chisel and more pounding upwards on upper bushing to pop it out. Top poly bushing install is easier than bottom. For lower, more pounding upwards, to pound lower bushing in. Be ready to do a lot of pounding. Be warned once removed old bushing will be destroyed, so no going back, complete the mission. May take all day if not longer.
