So I had the fortunate opportunity to show case the break in oil filter taken off of two brand new 3UR-FE engine one on a tundra purchased 02/28/2020 and one on a lexus purchased 12/30/2019.
The Lexus is picture on the bottom and Tundra on top. Respectively, I changed the oil out on the tundra at 3800 miles and the lexus at 2500.
You can see the filter color difference between the lexus and tundra being a little bit lighter and less burnt/oxidized.
What's also interesting is there were more metal shaving and potentially wear on the tundra. Almost 3x as much metal shaving on the tundra per linear foot of filter media.

What do you think could caused this? Both vehicle were broken in per the manual recommended instructions.

Both look very good. I've seen much worse ...
Also think the color is due to filter material and time, hours of operation.

However, I would be worried more about the rock ... Hopefully it didn't block the oil flow :D

Looks to me like both oil filters are doing their jobs.

Upon further analysis, it seems like Toyota cellulose media is just mediocre compared to the rest of the competition. I'm not saying that it can't do the job, it most certainly can but there are vastly superior oil filter around. Especially if you look at the ones with full synthetic fiber media. I remember our oil change interval used to be 5000 mile for engines running 0w-20 and now they are stretching it to 10000 miles. I'm not that confident the factory Toyota filter can prevent wear as good as other filter out now on the market.

Both engines are NOT made in America or to the same standards.

Japan built Lexus engine's critical moving parts are highly polished by hand using cork for a supremely smooth experience - I mean its a LEXUS no?

They don't take the time to do that here in Great America.

Nah i think all the filter are pretty much the same once you switch over to full synthetic media and should be changed out per manufacturer's recomendation. But there's a huge gap in filtration performance between cellulose and synthetic or even synthetic blend. The only reason I wanted to bring this up is because some of us Tow or are under the severe use category where we're pushing our vehicle to its design limit. If you're going to play by the edge might as well do the due diligence of understanding where the weakest links are.

Anyways I just wanted to write a long winded narrative to throw you off my tail and yes TEAM AMSOIL motor oil numba 1.

Don't think if the 3UR FE is built in Japan actually. It's definitely assembled with the vehicle there but I don't know if they actually hand assemble any of the vehicle sub components. pics or it didn't happen.
