What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Damn. And I thought when I did back to back jobs in a little town north of here that i had it bad 80 miles round trip, 90 minutes total.

 

I live 25 from my job and the people around here act like I live on the moon.
Best part is it usually takes me less time to get to work than people who live 10 miles away because I'm traveling all on highways.

 

25 miles is acceptable. 40 miles for me was going to be an hour each way(or longer) in heavy traffic. I'm not going to spend 2-3 hours a day driving. Life is short enough and we are already spending more time at work than with our families. I get up early to go to the gym in the mornings so that means I'm usually in bed by 2130. For me to drive an hour it means I basically come home, eat dinner, watch a a show or two and then go to bed. Not much of a life outside work Mon-Fri. That's just my take. I realize everyone's situation is unique. I just can't see myself driving 70+ miles to work 1 way.

 

Quick reminder for future reference...

 

I used to live in the DC suburbs....48 mile one way commute. 1 hour in the AM (left the house at 6:30) and 2+ hours in the afternoon (left work at 4PM when I was able). When I moved to Atlanta, I said "no more"....we moved to where I was driving againts traffic for my commutes and it's 8 miles and 15 minutes...30 on a bad day.

 

I used to be in a similar boat; I drove a company vehicle back and forth each day 200+ miles, sometimes more. I usually averaged 3000+ miles a month. I did that for 4 or 5 years I think, and I was miserable. Towards the end I started taking the scenic route to help with road rage issues and keep my mind looking at new/different things. I searched the local job boards for over a year and a half until I finally landed the amazing current job I have. I was sooooo relieved to learn I only had to work 8hrs a day and my travel was less than 3 miles each way! I rode my bike to work for a year or so before we purchased the tundra for me. I know my family enjoys me being in a better mood and more time around them.
I found out after I left the old job, that they finally decided that was to much driving and hired a new tech.......MFers!

 

3rd times the charm I guess.

My 1/4 back rod had worked loose in some parts, and my dash creaks had returned...
1/2 was too big, and apparently 1/4 was too small. 3/8 was the choice item.

Some areas it slid right in, and seated like a dream. Some areas I struggled to push it in. We will see in time. I now have 92 feet of 1/4" backer rod, 12 feet of 3/8", and 12 feet of 1/2" extra OMG LOL

I agree, especially after laying around in the gravel eyeballing it some more.
What are good OEM replacements? I don't have any plans on this being a rock crawler but I will definitely keep wheeling in the yard for yard work.

Suspension is new territory for me. Kinda scared for my pocketbook, and my inexperience on this one.

but anyways, is anyone running Archive Garages Shock re-location Kit? I’m considering ordering it here shortly.

If you’re running it, what shocks did you pair I up to. Obviously 12” stroke are needed but trying to decide if I should go this route or just go the easy way and order some custom 2.5s or Icon 2.5s to go with stock location.

I normally would never post anything more than my hands, but you can't see my face so I'm comfortable with it. I wanted to experiment with this new tripod I bought.

 

i toyed with the idea of that kit, but the lack of anyone having experience with it made me just not do it...

Just picked up this 05 double cab today with 182,000 miles on it and every single receipt since it’s original purchase. Excited to get some ideas from this thread!

@Rheywood456 hey man! Good to see you still have your truck, I wondered where you went.

I dont have it yet but plan to get it, just had a lot of stuff in my way lately. I have 11" shocks already that I'll run on it, but I'll need to do something about my exhaust as well to clear the passenger side.

Some guys have run 10" shocks in stock location, I don't know that a bigger shock can reasonably fit with my setup.

 

Yeah it’s fairly new. I’ve found 2 people on Instagram that are running it. Both have only good things to say and that it was installed very easily. One guy is waiting for his Deavers to show up to really test the travel he is getting.

With the right shocks and leafs travel should be 12”+

 

Also, I think he discontinued the shackle flip. He is releasing hammer hangers for us though which is super popular among the tacoma world

trucks doing good. Nothing major in additions. But got a few things to do here this year.

yeah I’ve been researching shocks. Sounds like fox has some 2.0s that are 19.34” collapsed and 31.34” extended. So 12” of shock travel which is what Eric recommends.

I’ll have to find a local buddy who could weld the lower shock mount tabs on for me.

but seems like a solid kit.

 

Welcome back meow! I’m new, but it sounds like your a long lost gem! Congrats on baby town!!! I wasn’t a kid hater, but never experienced them, now I’ve got two and love it! I just need to learn them how to put tools and flashlights back!!! I’ve got a backpack for work/side Jobs that gets emptied weekly!

 

Hahaha that’s awesome. We’ve just got the one for now. She’s 6 months but she’s kept us quite busy!! Makes things a little tougher to get done out in the garage!

Thanks! He’s super helpful at getting in the way, he mainly likes “pokey” things, so I give him a screw driver or a awl haha and he leaves me alone.

@Rheywood456 yup it looks like a good way to get full extension to me. It's no long travel but I dont need all that.

He told me the same, 12" is optimal, but I happen to have 11" shocks that are Fox 2" with reservoir so I'm going that route.

Just a heads up, I considered buying 2.5" shocks instead but the interesting thing is they extend further than the 2" for some reason. Keep an eye on measurements if you go that route.

 

What is the stock travel on these trucks?

 

Since I can't do any suspension work at the moment... I lubed my window tracks with pb blaster teflon spray same stuff I used on my seat belts. The tracks were funky. The next time I have the door panels off I'll finish the job. Pops, and I have been laying floor all day.

 

Finding random odd jobs to do, posts multiple times a day, loves PB Blaster...

Thank you though. I am trying to stay proactive on my truck, and projects. They balance my mind out, and keep it from falling in the abyss again. I am kinda bummed out about my rear leafs. My brain is having a hard time figuring out where to start on that job.

Something I learned from my jobs over the years. It's better to be proactive instead of reactive. I am not the best at this, but I am improving I think.
