    Typical engineer attitude...

But in all seriousness, if IT isn't working with you to figure out the right way to run your application without the need for full-on admin rights, they should at least provide a laptop or workstation that can run it separate from your web browsing and email activities. I've been on both sides of the conversation. Sucks all around.

    No kidding.

My bet is you're asking for full rights on the computer and not just opening the rights on the app. If the IT department doesn't know how to do that then you need to take that up with senior management. Your trying to circumvent security policies because you're so important (how many times have I heard that) puts the entire business at risk.

As I tell the people I support, "No ticky no washy".

IT Security is running a dictatorship where I work for good reason. Our engineers and the majority of our end-users request nonsense like this all the time. The interesting thing is they think they know best how to accomplish what it is they THINK they need. In reality they don't understand what is that actually needs to be done and WHY it needs to be done that way.

Our engineers have some software that will not run unless it checks its version against a cloud server and then updates, if appropriate. They had multiple issues with this, first, they don't have admin rights on their box, second, the firewall rules do not allow SFTP and HTTPS out of our secure work environment. They thought they would request that we allow FTP ingress and egress straight out of our secure environment to the web for ANY IP. They lost their damn minds....

I work from the field at all times with a VPN connection that requires secondary validation. I need access to software whenever I get to a site at all hours foreign and domestic which include troubleshooting when customers call. How is this request nonsense?

That's way too open ended to comment on. So you're saying you need to be able to download any software you want, from wherever on the internet that you want, at any time that you want, from any internet connection that you want?

Our group has divisions in aerospace, surveillance, oilfield operations, treat detection, volatile gas movement just to name a few. No one runs with open admin rights.

Seriously, if your IT can't facilitate your needs you need new IT management.

I have no idea what your situation might be. I do know that your request is too vague for anyone to know what it is that actually needs to be done. It sounds like you are asking for admin rights to your computer, so it can update software at any time you need it to. That is not an odd request honestly, I get requests just like that all day long, funny enough they come from IT Networking typically. They should be able to make you a local admin account ONLY for your laptop, that you ONLY use when you need to run something as an Administrator, such as when you update that 3D software. That, of course, comes with liability on the part of the business as well as yourself. You would have to sign an Administrative Acceptable Use Agreement and get it approved by Management before IT even considers giving you admin rights.

This, all day long this. It's very often not about whether or not IT can or cannot facilitate your needs (well, OK, in some places it is, depending on how competent they are, LOL). It's about whether or not facilitating your needs puts the network/servers/etc. at risk, amongst other things.

With that said, most decent places will indeed have some sort of AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) or something similar in place that covers granting local admin access to the computer, especially if a) you're well-trained enough that any potential risk is mitigated, and b) you can show how said mitigation can and will take place, and c) you can ALSO show how NOT gaining local admin access impedes not only your mission but that of your unit/organization.

I'm the CIO at a large federal agency and I have teams working around the globe. Doing one week in the office and one week teleworking; my Deputy is on the opposite schedule. We were truly amazed at how much we could do when we were forced into the COVID-19 telework situation.
