Evidently you havent read the definition of a hipster if thats what your holding up as jealousy. And i think they have a awesome lifestyle. Great videos.

 

I love the term “overland” We used to call it car camping.

 

LOL... kinda true.

Car Camping: Load the minivan with Coleman gear and go glamping for a few days.
Fancy Car Camping: Bought a full kitchen set at Cabela's and Dad's too cheap to buy firewood, so we're bringing the minivan and a truck.
Overlanding: No kids yet, so have disposable income. Bought a fancy tent and other expensive kit and are now out exploring.
Fancy Overlanding (OverGlamping?): No kids yet and we make a chit-ton of money working remote. Let's spend $50-200K on a rig and live "off grid". We'll make Youtube videos so it's all a tax write-off.

I'm totally jealous, but in a good way. This Overlanding gear wasn't around when I was in my 20's. I might not be married with kids now if this stuff was available when I got out of college...

I agree with almost all of that. Except for the 805 beer. I drink that stuff all the time and I don't own any of the other items.

 

It’s a nice build, but I could enjoy my truck for way less money. Maybe 35’s, to start off, and a good ground tent like the OZTENT and go camping. Then upgrade from there, like add sliders, skids.

As you can imagine the 4Runner wasn't quite up to pulling almost 5k lbs up in the mountains, so I went full derp and bought the Tundra:



I'm a recovering Overlander/Ricer.

 

They have gone through all the transitions, even rebuilt a Toyota Sunrader

We're looking at campers right now. My story is very similar to yours - I currently have a small Ruger overland trailer that I've built out to be pretty functional. I'll probably keep it, but we would like to be able to have a very comfortable base camp for longer-term camping, national parks, etc...

How does the Tundra pull your current trailer? We're going to go look at the 16BH and the 17JG this coming weekend.

 

The Tundra pulls like a dream! Pop it into Tow-Haul S4 and go. Funny story, in January we were moving my kid into college in Grand Junction, CO from Denver. We hit what was supposed to be a "mild storm" going over the mountains. Mild storm quickly turned into white-out on I-70 with heavy snow & ice at 6%-8% inclines, and I was pulling the trailer with my kid driving her Camry behind. I had to go into 4WD and was doing about 25mph 30 feet behind the semi in front of me just to stay on the road & in sight, but the Tundra didn't budge. Kid said the trailer was fish-tailing occasionally but I stayed off the brakes and honestly didn't feel much from inside the cab, it was smooth and the truck drove like she had chains and the trailer wasn't there. My confidence in the truck shot through the roof after that. Normal towing is really, very smooth and easy. A Wolf Pup doesn't push the truck at all. Yes, I'm shopping for some chains now too lol

We went with the Wolf-Pup 16PF. Didn't want bunk beds, the kitchen was big enough, wife didn't want a wet-bath, and the wrap-around dinette/slide is actually bigger & deeper than other comparable models we looked at (Coleman,etc). My fat-self fits behind the dinette comfortably, though we usually put the kid/dogs on that side for dinner. It's a perfect couples-camper. If I had a wishlist, it would just be for bigger tanks. Fresh could be a bit bigger though not a deal-breaker, but with 3 adults boon-docking for 10 days, the black/gray tanks fill up fast. We're looking at external tanks for those longer off-grid trips.

We've had it almost a year now and zero issues, no leaks and no problems. I'm really happy with it and we're planning our next travel trailer for a few years down the road, keeping in mind our Tundra will be the puller. We want a toy-hauler next and are eye-balling the Wolf-Pup's big brothers,the Wolf-Pack's since we only have a Harley at 1000lbs max. leaving the UVW (7500)+toy weight well below the 10k Tundra limit with room for "stuff" & fluids.

 

Great info - weight is very similar to the 17JGBL so I anticipate the same behavior. We have kids so we're going with a slide out version and a bunkhouse - otherwise I'd be going the same route as you I think. I've pulled much more weight than this but only around town and never through inclement weather so this is great to hear.

They both sound incredibly whiny and entitled and I wish I could buy 10 CBI bumpers just to spite them.

 

They spent more time trashing CBI than they did talking about the company that sent them the new bumper. Not a great way to "make more relationships"

 

IMO, don't bother with chains. Lived in Colorado for the entirety of my 61 years, and have never needed chains except for a few times offroad in deep clay mud, which would never have been passable with any trailer. Certainly not needed them ever on pavement or dry dirt/gravel.
