What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

My uncle runs the tool room for the CTA. i might see if he can get a bender to use.

 

Man the retrofit on ye old Tundra was easy peasy lemon squeezy. My F-150 headlights are permasealed. It. sucks.

 

try and get corner lights apart and i'll pay ya for a set! lol

 

The running light in corner of the headlight or the blinker on the corner of the truck? What would you do with em?

 

the blinker corner lights. if i black the headlights out the corner lights have to be too.

 

Friday installed spidertrax 1.25 inch wheel spacers, new passenger CV axle, drilled holes for the last 2 skid plate bolts. Did some 4 wheeling Saturday with a large group of Toyotas. Mostly Tacomas. I didn't get any action shots. One of these days I'll buy a GoPro. There were over 30 of us Saturday. M
Not sure the exact number because 30 is when I stopped counting but I bet it was at least 50 total Toyotas. Some didn't even have 4wd.and they.just sent it

 

Is that the Alpine head unit? It came up as not fitting when I checked Crutchfield. Did you have to do anything special to make it work?

 

all this proves is the new tacomas are too big and the first gen tundra was just perfect for a v8 rig.


i miss the small tacos.

 

I play nice with the new tacos in my group but inside everytime I see a 3rd gen I'm screaming at the driver "you could have had a v8 for pennies in the dollar!" The dimensions of the 3rd gen and the weight are close to our Tundras. The big decision maker for many is the Tacomas have a bigger aftermarket.

 

oh the aftermarket is huge for sure. but im use to slim pickings in the aftermarket. the 1st gen taco doesnt have a whole lot compared to alot of other trucks. tundras very minimal.



have i mentioned i drive an Avalon with a tune and custom exhaust? that things got NO aftermarket. I've literally got Lotus parts on it

 

I don't think its the Alpine unit. No alpine logo on the front of that screen. Also the buttons don't match the front of the Alpine unit either.

Not sure why Crutchfield says it won't fit since its just a single DIN (2") unit that the screen attaches to. Hmm.

 

Yeah I just read the post again and see that it is an android unit of some sort.

likely the case. the radio doesnt have much room behind it compared to most cars. hell my OEM install radio was kinda pushing it with the connectors.. but its in there no rattles from it.

 

Hmm. I was able to install a mini amp that is 2 inches thick right up against the a/c vent and then installed the Kenwood KDC-BT365U single din which is 6.25" deep and it due to the cables in the back got pushed foward only about a 3/8 inch. Given the thickness of the cables and the thickness of that mini amp, I think the depth of the radio cavity is almost 8 inches deep to where the face of the stereo would be. With the Alpine unit having the screen attached to the single DIN and then even being able to adjust the screen outwards from the dash, I would think it would be possible.

 

I'd imagine the factory toyota housings aren't easy to open, but the aftermarket ones seem to all use butyl.

 

Yep the ones I purchased were butyl. The stock lights I don't remember but it wasn't too bad opening them up. The lenses weren't in great shape though so that's why I replaced them with blacked out aftermarket units.

 

The ext. size is very close but the inside is an entirely different story. Those taco's feel cramped and I'm only 5'8"! I do love the front ends though. The aftermarket for our trucks is pretty slim but I feel it has enough to be dangerous.

The only thing I really want that I can't find is a larger fuel tank. I would love a 40+ gallon tank to get in the neighborhood of 400+ miles which I guess brings me to the other "issue" with our 1st gens. We don't have as many people figuring out all the tricks and things that will work like just finding out that the GX460 brakes fit our truck (with very slight modification). I'd really like to figure out if we could make the 38 gallon 2nd gen tundra tank fit our trucks.

I got it from Amazon, but it's currently sold out there...it can be had other places. I confirmed today that the GPS works since I can see myself moving on the nav screen but I still can't manipulate the screen...so frustrating...lol. I was able to get to the NAV screen because it has a hard NAV button on the top as well as volume and power buttons. Also, once I can get to the setting screens, it has all sorts of options to control it from my steering wheel controls.

 

XTRONS TQ109P.... it's essentially an Android 9 tablet that withconnects to the rest of your stereo system with WiFi, DVD, GPS, BT (For phone and OBDII), rear, front and DVR camera inputs as well as USB and HDMI connections. It also has an optional TPMS system and 3G which I'm not getting for now.

Nothing special to make it work, just used a PAC RP4.2-TY11 to wire it up.

Had to oil the hood release. First time I've had the hood open in a couple months and apparently it stuck, had to have the wife hold the release up inside while I pulled the hood open.

 

I’ve often been asked if it was going to fit and was successful every time.

I’m not sure if this is a ‘he said’ or ‘she said’ moment so I’ll leave it at that.

 

That's definitely a 'that's what she said" moment.

 

I love seeing a 1st gen Rav4 out there. I always liked those and would actually love to have one for a daily driver. I came across a used one recently that had a manual transmission.

 

Too big yet they feel horribly cramped, especially in the backseat. They just aren't a great use of space. Our trucks really were the perfect size. The backseat in the Tundra double cabs is actually roomy and comfortable looking(I've never sat in one).

 

It is...my at the time 12 and 7 YO hated the back seat in my 2017 DC Tacoma...they are 15 and 10 now and love the Tundra back seat...they have a ton of space. It really will accommodate 2 adults nicely and can fit 3 if needed...3 in my Tacoma was a joke.

Yesterday I washed all the mountain salt and grime off the truck with my pressure washer. I don't know about you guys but it's a constant battle to keep my pressure washer running. Then I cleaned the inside of my camper shell with simple green as it had some funk building up from all this rain. I also waxed off the surface rust that was on the bed. Finally, I got my backup camera mounted while I wait for my headunit to arrive. Excited to have more visibility out of the back.

 

Throw a new carb, filter, and gaskets on it. You can get rebuild kits but for the price a new carb is easier.
Then if it's going to sit for more than a month drain the fuel and refill it with a little 50:1 canned premix, run it for a minute and shut it down.

The premix already has fuel conditioners, and no ethanol in it. Plus the small amount of oil won't hurt anything.
