What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Inspired by your post - and a growing disgust at the AC funk - I decided to have a go at this today. Did not find the debris you had, but there are definitely some patches of gunk on the coils that may or may not look like a stowaway sentient life form slowly consuming the Enterprise from the inside out. So I'm going to scrub and vacuum and see how that helps.


Question for you /others: what's this thing, and should I be concerned that it is cracked in two spots? (It came out of that hole that I / we used to access the coils, at least I think that's what you did too.)

Not a problem. Glad you are tackling this in the name of Galactic Peas.

That cracked thing is a Blower Fan Resistor ($30?). Mine was gnarled up, but not cracked. I just brushed off the loose stuff and sanded the copper to remove corrosion. Also, put some dielectric grease on the copper and reinstalled.

Per the coils: I tried brushing but it bent some coils so I stopped right away (see my build pic). Went to plan B and put a water hose with gun attachment up the blower hole and lightly misted the gunk to soften it. Kept at it for a while and slowly got the hang of where I needed to spray. Its awkward. You can cover the resistor hole with a rag and then peek in with a flash light. Just take your time.

I caught all kinds of gunk coming out of the AC drain in the engine bay with a rag just to see what was in there. Fan power is way better now coming from vents. Smells are gone. Go forth and prosper.

 

Installed Bilstein 6112, SPC UCAs and Falken Wildpeak 255/80/17! Oh, and finally started a build thread! Solid weekend effort.

 

Is there any way to get to the other side of that coil? It’s best to try and push it out the direction it came from. That’s why the foaming cleansers can be beneficial because they help bring it out slowly then light rinse to get it off and down the drain

 

Not any easy way that I could see without disassembling the entire unit. The box is water proof and the coils have some breathing room around the sides and bottom for water to run toward the drain. Yeah, its best if one could blast from the opposite side but mine got pretty clean irregardless. Light blasts after a few misting soaks softens the goo.

I would definitely vacuum any twigs and mulch out first as in my case. The coil dirt stuff is mostly dirt particles that will wash away once rinsed a few times.

 

Thanks for the response guys and the check engine light went out...?? Got a feeling some moisture got up in there cause it was raining that day it showed up. I will still get it read by a friend of mine and see if he come up with anything. He's a mechanic by trade so I do trust his ability... Just inquired about the OBD cause who can't use a new tool?!

 

The other thing I've been doing to my Tundra is washing the crap out of it this winter. I've never washed a vehicle as much as I've washed this truck. I'm so damned determined to keep this in good shape as long as I can. Man! we use a lot of salt in this area... and calcium chloride.. uggghhhhh!!

 

Grease rub it this summer with Moly-B. Two tubs, a sponge, and two days of work. Follow up with 10 minute PB Penetrator full body chassis showers every 6 months.

 

Yeah, I'm preparing for the grease rub and PB Blast spray as soon as the weather turns nicer...Under body washes are a must.. There's going to be lots of elbow grease this summer I can tell.. and wet and dirty clothes!

 

But what's it do? Never mind, now that I know what it is, the google will probably give the answers.

So you're saying blow water in through the fan? I originally thought you were blasting water in through the resistor hole. I can't see any way to spray directly onto the coils, so I guess that's where "lightly misted" comes in. I've managed to spray some stuff in through the resistor hole, then brush the gunk off with a soft bristle brush. I think I've bent some coils though, and it's hard to get all the way to all of the edges.

Ah, so any liquid that goes into this area should drain out that hole in the engine bay, along with, hopefully, a lot of gunk. I could theoretically really flush it by pouring some water in?

Wish I had a garage and driveway, instead of an apartment complex parking lot. I don't have a power outlet anywhere near my truck for a vacuum, nor a place to store a hose.

Oh yeah. I’ve been getting yelled at for the greasy clothes since last year.

I’ve noticed my greasing from last year has turned into a semi-hard shell that can only be scratched off.

 

Remove your blower (3 screws). Stick your hose gun up there and shoot short blasts. Observe through the resistor hole. Its awkward, but doable. No need for vacuum as yours is fairly clean. I’d be hesitant to pour a bucket of water in there. Just use short misting blasts with the hose gun until the fluid runs clean and the coils look clean.

 

I just did my SPCs as well. Did you put the knuckle insert in from the bottom? I saw a couple of youtube videos that said to come from the top.

 

Thant's where I put mine. I actually just finished mine up today....but I have to wait for the new cable that connects the screen to the HU to get full functionality. On my initial install, I broke one of the cables on the ribbon cable and it killed the touch function of the touch screen...which defeats the purpose of an Android HU... My reverse camera works on the screen though when I shift to reverse, so now I have a reverse camera but no radio for a week...




I used all the included angled spacers to try and not get the handle in the view and I mostly succeeded:



And here is the HU in it's upper and lower positions with the reverse view. The HU changes angle in addition to moving up and down. It doesn't look as obtrusive in person as it does in the pics. It doesn't block the vents, though it kinda looks like it does in the pics. I like the really big screen and all the tablet like functionality was cool as shit...before I broke the cable...

 

Whoa! That screen is huge.

 

Just looked it up - funny, but seems to be only a 2" difference. Ford shows inside sidewall at 20.0 & I measure my Tundra at 18.0. Although the floor of the Ford was rather swayback from hauling boulders. Oops.

To stay on what have you done - Took the Tundra to a trusted body shop Saturday to get an estimate on painting the hood. Very rough off the top of the head estimate - $600. Interesting thing was he said it appears a replacement hood. Appears they didn't strip/sand the protective coating before painting it. Sheesh. I wonder if a VIN check would reveal an accident & the body shop guilty of this sin.

 

I finished up the CV boot, left and right lower ball joints, both endlinks, Toytec/Bilstein lift, Toytec diff drop kit and SPC UCAs today. I'm f'n tired. The UBJs were a pain to get out. I had three different ball joint press kits to find a good combo. Finally finished, lowered and the camber is jacked. I didn't even test drive it. It's going straight to an alignment tomorrow.

 

I too installed mine in the middle of the handle but have seen others kick it over to the side a bit. I chose a much smaller viewing screen though. I still need to adjust my camera up a bit for a better view...

 

i debated middle or side. decided on side mount because its out my hands way.

I really need to get me some damn sliders. I wish I had access To a bender to just make my own.

 

VAG scan tools can give a bit more detail than that, but still takes testing and diagnosis to pinpoint problems. Codes definently help.

My GTI had really bad misfiring on cylinder 1 recently, was sounding real thumpy and smelled like gas at the exhaust tips. Was a busted vacuum line from the valve cover to the intake manifold. The code gave me the hint and I diagnosed the rest.

Today I browsed the internet and found the subwoofer that I'll buy one day. Started planning in my head how I'll build the box for it. Still torn on if I will retain the factory carpeting or just bed liner the box and cut the back section of carpet out.

 

Seems to be lots of car guys around illinois. I bet some bald tire guys have a bender that they could fire up for a few bends. If all else fails you could just buy a kit.
