H4 Bi-LED 1.5 Mini Projector Lens Bulbs DIY retrofit

Hey guys, here is the simplest mod I tired with my Tundra. I've done the full retrofit on my old 4runner and a few other cars over the years and I was going to go this route but I saw these one night while going down the rabbit hole of ebay and for $30 I'd thought I'd try them out.
It was so simple and it turned out great!

All you have to do is remove the reflector in your headlights and install these just like a regular bulb.

The cut off is crisp and the light is bright. The only downside is that you have to do the grounding mod to make your fog lights and highs work. But not bad for the price and time you save.

I really hate baking headlights and the clean up that is involved with them so this is perfect.
I'd say that it was only about an hour to take off, figure out the install of the bulbs and re-install.

Nice! Light looks good and I love the simplicity of it all except I’d love to see the wiring to make the other functions work properly.

 

Glad those worked out for you. When I was going back down the headlight rabbit hole I saw something like that and it was getting pretty good reviews. I good upgrade that doesn't break the bank or back is always good.

 

That looks great! Cutoff is nice for such a simple upgrade. I bought phillips h4 LED and theres some scatter

 

Those are neat. I’d love to find a set for my fog lights.

 

How are the DRL’s with this?

 

well I don’t know exactly what the grounding mod is, I do know it is required for some of brands of LED’s. Apparently some of these LED’s cause the high beam indicator to stay on and fog lights not to work.

 

I haven't done the mod yet but from what I've found this is the same thing that it needs on our Gen.

This out of the box??? I've used plenty of other LEDs that look just as if not brighter/tighter that don't need some extra mod. It's 2020, they should all just work out of the box, ugggg.....

I was more curious on if the reflector on the 3rd gen headlight is as easy to remove. But I probably should have asked that in one the threads on 3rd gen retrofit.

How wide is the beam? The cut off looks good, but the beam doesn't look very wide in your pictures ?

 

You guys aren't serious with these tiny projectors are you? Also the "high" beam is an LED on the underside that faces the bottom of the reflector headlight and provides what, the aura of a proper high beam? LOL. Even budget projectors will give off better lighting and retrofitting is not hard now days with threaded shaft projectors. There are many budget mini H1 projectors that would give off much better lighting for not a lot of coin.

There are a bunch of budget h1 projector options out now. If people want to exhaust all other options before baking there headlights I don't blame them. I did the same thing and now I'm here. My current h1 projectors are serving me well, I'm building another set to change some things, and I already have the next ones after that planned with a g5r d2s projector.
Before baking my headlights open I was willing to try led drop ins and just about anything. Crossing the Rubicon when you bake your lights and pull them apart is a big step. The die has been cast.
We are all on the journey.

 

The beam isn't that great but that is more of the headlights fault than the projectors.
There is no lateral adjustment with our headlights so it's basically just how much you can move the headlights with your hand.

Yes but that is why I'm trying these out.
This is about experimentation rather than going with just what is already available, you how, the basic concept of how modifying anything started...

I feel like something new in terms of headlights will come out soon. I remember looking at LED’s 3 years ago and told myself to hold off on purchasing due to the ever advancing tech. Glad I waited and the prices came down, too! Win win.

I’ll wait another year on Projectors and see where we are. I’m guessing lower cost and better performing options. Cool thing is I have an extra set of brand new assys boxed away to experiment when ready.

That's alright because I'll blame you for linking (or possibly just mentioning them) to the damn akkon headlights that got me started looking at new clear headlights to replace my fogged OEM housings. If the reflector worked as well in the aftermarket housings as the OEM did with my led "bulbs" I wouldn't have gone looking for something better.

 

I’ve mentioned them quite a few times. They are working well for me in conjunction with the Katanas which got poo poo’d as well from another member. Seems when it comes to headlights that peoples expectations are set too high?

Only problem I’ve had with the Akkons is a leaky side marker which they gladly sent me a full new set at no cost. I’m pretty open about problems and fixes. I do my research online and gotta say I don’t remember anyone complaining about the assys or Katanas (unless they weren’t aimed properly or installed cup upside down).

Only thing I’ve put on my truck which I’ve corrected are my stupid red painted handles and the squishy crap steering bushings you recommended. Those I didn’t even need, but still put them on. Never again!

Not a bad record so far on all the work done in almost two years.

 

Nah you're good. The beamtech LEDs just didn't work as good in the aftermarket housings and I didn't want my light output to go backwards. As far as our trucks go, the led drop ins are a huge upgrade. I don't think I could stand stock after what I've been getting used to.

 

So just updating this:

I didn't need to do the grounding mod, just added an extra set of resistors to the headlights and they worked.
These ones that come with the bulb dosen't seem to be strong enough or working.
No biggie, now I took it off and am wiring all my light to a switch panel.

Also added switchbacks to the turn signals that matched the LED's perfectly.

High beans and fogs were working all well though before I pulled them.
