LSD worth it?

Hello. If I were to buy an 2005 or 2006 4wd without LSD would I be really missing out? 95% of driving is going g to be pavement but MTN snow and mud are inevitable. Fyi I drive. 1995 GMC Sierra 1500 and I've been successful so far.

 

Tha majority of Tundras don't have LSD. You could always get one installed later.

I added the Kazuma / TRD LSD to my 2002 4WD truck years ago, I like it.

So I am taking vin numbers off various times tundras on Craiglist and looking to see what ones have the LSD. I came across this. Both say limited slip but one seems to have a fancy traction control. I screen shot the two so you could see. Is one better than the other.

 

Aren’t the post-2003 Tundras Limited Slip the fake version that use the braking system?

 

I think that is only on the 2007 and up Tundra.

My '07 has this brake actuated traction control system and it works just fine, I just don't know why they call it an LSD because that's not what it is.

I’d definitely get an LSD truck, as I like mine that came with it when purchased new in 2002.

 

Our 4runner has the “electronic” limited slip. It does pretty well for what it is. I think they should take out the “automatic lsd” and rephrase it electronic lsd

 

The way I see it a real LSD (factory & aftermarket) applies power to the rear wheels, and an electronic brake actuated 'LSD' cuts power to the rear wheels.

 

I get what you guys are saying however, both of these 4wd models seem to have what toyota calls "limited slip differentials " is one of these more sought after than the other or is one better than the other. I was under impression there were 2 different rear end options. Does this mean there is 3? Anyone with some insight please chime in

 

The thing about the factory LSD is, in my opinion, most are getting old and worn out by now. It might be worth it to pick up a non lsd one and install a new one.

 

Only one is an actual physical limited slip differential...the other is an electronic system that tries to limit wheel slip it detects by applying brakes to that wheel. The second one is part of the "vehicle stability control" system. Personally I would rather have the first...YMMV.

Oh, and if you are in 4x4 VSC turns off automatically...which I believe means the auto-lsd feature is turned off as well.

Having said that, if I was looking for a Tundra, it's over all condition would be the driving factor and the LSD would be a bonus. I would much rather have a Detroit Truetrac (mentioned above) than either of the systems that came OEM with the 1st Gen Tundras and you can get one installed for less than $1K.

The physical LSD was available in all 1st Gen Tundras, Vehicle Stabillity Control (VSC) was only available in 2004-2006...you could not have both for obvious reasons.

 

Plus the LSD isn't as good as back in the day.....but at least the Pot is better.

Sounds like there are 3 different rear end options. Was all the gearing the same on all rear ends?

 

Only two rear-end options...LSD or non-lsd. The vehicles with VSC rear-ends were no different than the non-lsd rear ends. All 2005-2006 Tundra 4x4s have 3.91 gears.

I've got a truck a local mechanic is going to look at for me. 06 with about 176k. Timing belt was done at like 105k. Do you guys swap timing belts every 90k or was it mainly because the stock timing belt was defective. Just trying to figure out what is going to be needed to get this truck up to snuff.

Timing belt and water pump suggested every 90k miles.

 

So uh.. n e one got the plug on a trd Kazuma lsd

 

I saw one on craigslist here in Atlanta last year...but that was the first one I'd seen in 5 years. Just get a True Trac...it's better anyway.
