Want Better Gas Mileage and More Power. Thoughts?

I keep seeing injectors being suggested in a lot of threads, but has anybody showed evidence that they provide improvement other than "feels good"?

Not knocking them but I'd like to see some science.

 

When I asked for honest feedback before most said that any improvement in MPG was very, very minimal. I'll eventually do them but I'm not expecting any improvement in MPG.

 

Paging wumbo-truck and hand model we need more testing darn it. Seriously we do, I’m interested too.

 

4 speeds rule! Less gears to muck up.

Per the 12 hole injectors: I gained 12 mpg and added 60 harses (Scottish word for horse) hahaha

Seriously, I’ve been very upfront on them. Negligible mpg. Makes sense as the fuel amount coming through the rail is regulated by the fuel pump and ECU and then again at the injector. The ECU is set to allow the same amount of fuel irregardless of injector.

The fuel does atomize better for more efficient explosion per test tube youtubes vids. There has to be some improvement due to this. How much? Not sure.

Where I do feel the difference is the gears seem to hold better rather than shifting quicker from 1st to 2nd the engine holds 1st longer and second longer. Keep in mind the new injector shifting happens per the Toy shift point speeds parameters still, but just a little longer than prior. Down shifting became very apparent afterwards (albeit slightly), as well. Before 12 holes was like no downshift feeling at all. Like it was in Neutral during slowing down coming to a stop sign/light.

Keep in mind I did these 12 holes as an experiment. I just wanted to clean my OEM injectors, but the local cleaning cost of around $225 and two days minimum truck downtime made the $300 12 holes a no brainer ($75 premium for convenience plus upgrade). Maybe I sell the old ones?

I’ve had these 12 holes for almost a full year now and they are great. Its hard to remember exactly how the truck was before exactly, but I’d say it drives much better. Almost like a small gear upgrade, although I don’t know what a real gear upgrade feels like. Truck shifting is seamless. The engine and transmission feel like ‘one’ where before the engine sometimes felt like it would spin higher than the transmission when pedal to floor.

Sounds crazy how injectors make shifting feel different, but thats the best I can explain it. Do not do these for MPG gain.

I’d like to see how a newer upgraded fuel pump would react with these 12 holes combo’d with 4.56 gears as suggested by Kieth. The cost is way more than its worth for me. Sounds fun though!

 

Buy another truck.

 

One other thing is I really tuned my engine up during this past year. New coil packs, valve gaskets, engine de-sludge, new PCV, synthetic oil, polishing my radiator cap, etc.

I’m sure all these engine optimizations helped somewhat, as well.

Curious if it's similar to the brake line phenomenon, where it isnt that the part is better but that dirty injectors are swapped for clean ones.

Speaking of swapping dirty for clean, I should do my fuel filter at some point. 230k it must be due.

 

This is one possibility. Although an argument can be made that I did use gas treatments every so often (STP) as a prevent to help injectors. Although from readings, the only real way to clean the injectors is micro-vibration sonic cleaning and then they pressure test and Ohms test.

Anyways, the cost of the experiment was worth it.

 

Oh no doubt. On TS forum we had an engineer who had his injectors cleaned professionally and did before/after flow tests. The flow rate did not really increase but all 8 injectors matched after the process which was the goal. He did not see a big improvement after but reported smoother idle and acceleration but admitted it may be placebo.

The cost of the job was quite a bit higher than the 12 hole injectors, around $600 if I recall. Knowing that, if the goal is restored performance then these seem to be a great value. I'm just not sure that they would help with power or efficiency enough to offset the cost as an upgrade vs a restorative measure.

 

Wow! $600 for injector cleaning? Thats huge. Brand new injectors run around $80-100 each.

The 12 holes are reman’d. Basically used and then cleaned and new parts like rubber washers and filter do-hickies put on.

I went back and read Keiths website about these injectors afterwards and what I was trying to describe above in post #38 makes sense now when matched up with Keiths description. The low end torque (holding gears/feeling like new gear upgrade was my description) and the engine and transmission feeling like one (by my description) is mid range power connection.

I’d say its more than placebo, but not earth shattering OMG! It definitely feels better. I think going back to the old ones would make me sad.

 

Yeah, it included all the bench testing results before and after. It wasn't a simple rinse agent but a full process with calibration. I wouldn't do it but enjoyed the read.

 

There is a marine boat place that does all that around here for about $30 bucks an injector with 2 day turn around. They won’t video the process I’m sure, as they don’t need to.

Yep...if gas mileage is an issue don’t get a truck or sell the one you have. There should be no complaining about MPGs if you are set on driving a truck (especially Toyota’s!)

 

Lower your front end, run the lightest and smallest wheels and tires you can and remove all extra weight possible. Install Dirty deeds injectors and long tube headers with a high flow exhaust system. Feather the throttle like a grampa everywhere you go. Don't drive over 55mph.

 

Maybe @dirtydeeds could grace us with some science on his product. However it makes sense that better fuel atomization would make for a better combustion. Similar concept is applied on v6 tacos with the TRD supercharger and 8th injector. It objects into the supercharger and the extra fuel is atomized by the supercharger

I figure the best one could realistically hope for in one of these trucks for street mpg is 16mpg, maybe 18 highway. I don't know what it would take to reach that.

I have everything I need in and on my truck. It's kind of a fat pig, and mostly mechanically stock yet I average 14/17.

Diminishing returns, folks.

 

I have an 03 tundra limited 4x4, with this vehicle specifically I have noticed a huge difference in performance and mileage depending on the fuel I put in it... It runs phenomenally well with mid grade gasoline. I was a that very surprised at the difference, both premium and regular gas make it feel heavyier or more sluggish. Mid grade is peak without having to do anything to the vehicle

 

Just my luck Costco only sells 87 and 93...welcome to the forum...

 

I'm running 89 octane ethanol free the last 10 days and I swear my truck sounds a little better as well. Hard to describe. Not worth the .70 upcharge though.

I always wondered why Lexus recommended premium fuel in the GX470 when its the same engine.

 

This is a great question worthy of investigation.

 

Look no further. Just tuned differently from the factory.
