New studs installed. It happens alot with my truck for some reason when I have my tires rotated . Usually my tire place pays they told me a local place charges them 50 bucks a stud.

Man, I had this happen on my FJ after a weekend in the desert; one stud sheared off completely and I lost 3 lug nuts on both front tires at some point - didn't notice until I got home which was a bit sketchy. Most tire shops can replace the studs for about $50. I never had the problem again after getting the stud replaced, and replacing the lug nuts - I probably should have taken the time to figure out what caused it in the first place though.

Too many ugga duggas. This is why you don't let others touch your lug nuts. Hand torque to spec only.

I'd find a new tire shop if it's a regular thing. The other guy nailed it, too many ugga duggas. It's not the studs, it's the incompetent boob on the impact gun.

Do you lubricate or anti seize your studs/nuts? This can lead to over torquing, even though the wrench signals correct torque.

Always torque fasteners as clean, dry unlubed.

I know some here my frown upon this, but i alway use a little dab of anti seize on the studs and the back of the wheels.

I used to do that too until I read about "wet" torqueing and how antiseize will skew the values. Now I only use antiseize around the hub.

Never use anti-seize on wheel studs. Great way to over torque or have lug nut back off.

For real people think I'm crazy, I ALWAYS carry in wheels/tires to be mounted and/or balanced, even if it means strapping them to the roof or stuffing them in a car like clowns.

Me "do you torque the lug nuts to spec?"
Teenager behind counter at tire shop "yes of course we do"
    Me "what's spec?"
Teenager behind counter at tire shop ::names some random universal number:: but I can't hear him over the sound of the impact gun ugga duggas in the background like it's the NASCAR pits

Tundra aluminum wheels torque spec 97 ft/lbs
Tundra steel wheels torque spec 154 ft/lbs

No lube! Per the chart above it can cause torque discrepancies. Over torque a stud and yield it, it may appear to be intact to the tire tech but it's lost it's clamping ability and could break off later. It's kinda crazy how many studs they must go through at tire shops, they probably pass that charge on to the customer too. I've never broken one on my personal vehicles even with wheel spacers. Anti seize on the hub face behind them is fine but it makes it messy to clean it up every you pull them off and reapply. You don't remove them every oil change to rotate anyway? Shame on you.

My tire shop doesnt use impacts to install, only to remove. I still watch them every time, if I saw one grab the impact he'd get my ugga dugga upside the head.
