When to install Diff drop

I have looked and searched and can not find an answer that has concences with the masses so here it is:

How much lift is acceptable to NOT do the diff drop?
2"?
2.5"?
3"?

 

2" kit I bought came with DD. I with would say 2" to save your axle.

 

You need it for around three inches and up. I lifted 2.9
Inches and installed it. I didn’t see much difference from before and after. I installed myself.

 

This is interesting and not the first time I’ve read or heard that. I know folks say the diff drop changes the angle of the axles but does anyone have (before/after) results? Don’t get me wrong I have one; maybe its more insurance measure than anything but how much of a difference does this make?

 

The bitch of it is it can affect the longevity of your needle bearing if you’re not careful. It doesn’t actually drop your diff, it pitches it forward at an angle to lower only the part your axles go
Into so if you don’t keep your oil topped off it can leave that bearing in the air bubble unlubricated. I won’t go through the trouble of taking it out now that it’s I. But I slightly regret it. My cv boots still look angled. I’m sure I’ll have to replace them sooner than stock.

 

The Pro with 2” lift doesn’t have it, that’s what I have and didn’t install one either. If you do, top off the oil until its at the fill threads again.

 

The articles I've read about it say 3+, but they also say that the CV angle only changes by a couple of degrees once it's in. I have a set laying around and have more than 3" in the front, but haven't installed them yet. Matthew at MCM said he didn't think they were necessary FWIW.

 

Installed them when I put my coilovers in and took them out a year later. No noticeable change in cv angles. They also make your front diff closer to your skid, so if you ever smash your skid hard enough your diff drop pucks will punch holes into your front diff.

 

FYI, it's a pain to install. You'll need magnet, it will be your life saver.

 

Let's ask this question then fellas...…

Who here has 5100's on the 2.5" setting or 6112's on say 1.9 and up or any other lift and HAS NOT installed the diff drop and if not, how many miles since install and have you had any issues?

 

Lots of the LT tundras are pushing 4" and none have diff drops.

Anything over 2.5” I’d do a diff drop and anything over an inch in the rear I’d do the carrier bearing drop

 

I've got 45,000 miles on 6112's on the top setting with no diff drop. I got my suspension from Keith at Dirty Deeds and he said not to worry about it.
