As promised I have went and purchased not only my first Tundra, but my first truck!! Was looking for a secondary vehicle for utility, hauling, fishing and some DIY fun, and after seeing a few I think I picked a good one ;)
This baby is an 01 with 228k miles, Limited 4x4 with the TRD Off-road Package! Best part is I was able to scoop her up for just under $3k (SoFL market)... I’ll let you guys take a look and let me know what you think, also give me some recommendations on the BIG important first things to check/inspect. Can’t wait to get this journey started!

    Sweet!

Focus on the nuts & bolts concerning maintenance / service / safety and reliability.
Clean it up the best you can, and install some seat covers like Wet Okole.
Replace the headlight housings with new Toyota OEM housings, and enjoy the ride.

Nice and Welcome to the party!!!

Based strictly on what i see, headlights and tires would be the 1st thing i tackle. Seats a little torn a seat cover, since being used as a utility vehicle. Otherwise id say invest in some Katskinz seats.

Good looking truck (looks just like mine, ha). I've never seen a used first gen tundra without a dented rear bumper! Mine came with both front and rear dented. I pulled them both, hammered them out best I could before i sanding, etching primer, and covered them with spray on bedliner. Things to inspect / replace:
    Timing Belt / water pump
    Ball joints
    CV axle boots
rear drive shaft U joints, carrier bearing, lube
rear drum brakes / adjustment (these came with an auto adjuster that they decided was ineffective. There is a newer version you can swap in if the back brakes are ready for replacement.
    Spark plugs
I would flush the brake fluid, steering fluid, coolant (when you do your timing belt is a good time)
Obviously oil change. I use a high capacity Mobil one filter M1-301. That allows you to run 7.2 qts of oil.
Headlights are horrible on these. New bulbs make a good bit of difference, if the lenses are cloudy, new headlight lenses are cheap on Amazon / ebay.

Definitely flush that brake fluid and inspect those brakes. Your fluid looks like ink in the reservoir. Brakes are not a strong point on these. If you have to replace any front brake hardware, do the 03 and up caliper conversion.

Definitely needs tires and alignment STAT. What would you recommend for tire size on stock setup, for a more full look?

This is great thank you! I’ll be having a nice weekend just looking over everything, doing some minor touches. This list will be a great reference for me to fall back on bud.

I was mainly referring to an A/T tire, something thats gonna be a little more rugged. Good both on and off road. I prefer the BFG K02, Nitto Ridge Grapplers also make good tire.

The hood has some rusting spots at the very front, some on the top outer lining for the bed. Any quick fixes for spots of rust? I’m going to also throughly check the frame out this weekend, any idea if Toyota is still honoring recalls? Not that I expect to need it, more for knowledge.

Don't let it rust through the metal by waiting a year or more for repair.
Sand down the rust till removed, or bare metal, and primer over it to stop the rust from reoccurring.
Spray can metal primer works good. Wet sand it till smooth and it's ready for paint. Get your trks paint code and go to a parts store and get a can of your color.
If like my trks color and it's not available use the following place.

    https://www.automotivetouchup.com/s...MIj6OanYuY5gIVgobACh3ffwUFEAAYASABEgIGx_D_BwE

From what I've read on this Forum, enter your VIN# on Toyota's site for recall info.
If the frame is rusted through and they haven't done anything to it you might qualify for frame replacement.

Hopefully others here will help you with that.

Congrats! Run the VIN at the dealer to see if the lower ball joints have been replaced under a recall. If not, you should get them for free. Otherwise, pick up the lower ball joint kit and replace them. Easy job with a tie rod separator and some other basic tools.

I'll also echo the timing belt/water pump service. Pricey at a shop but good for 90K. Then baseline the fluids.

Short answer Yes, but it depends on a few things. Suggest you take a moment and check out @lsaami Early 1st Gen (2000-2003) Tundra Frame Replacement FAQ

I'd also drop by your local Toyota dealer and inquire. There has been more than one recall for that year dealing with frame and cross member.

That’s a really nice truck for 3 large. I have more than that into mine, plus a butt-ton of labor, and it still looks like a piece of garbage.
