Hey, what's up! This is my first time posting here. Hope to get some insight on an odd issue I'm having with my 2016 tundra sr5. I have done nearly all my own mechanic work for the past 20 years. My dad was a certified mechanic for GM he taught me. No I'm not a certified auto mechanic but I know enough to be dangerous I guess. Anyway it's a 4.6l v8 with 47k miles. I feel like this issue has been present since day one but it happens so rarely I never thought much of it, but it seems to be getting worse. Under extreme heavy breaking ie someone pulled out in front of me. Or another example, just the other day I was 10 feet from a UPS truck coming the other direction and a deer flew right between us. So this only happens when I jump on the brakes extremely hard. It makes a knocking and grinding noise and the abs doesn't seem to be engaging, there is no pulsing from the pedal at all just a horrible noise but I still come to a stop. It never happens under normal breaking circumstances. Any ideas? It's still under bumper to bumper warranty untill 60k and I don't want to go in blind asking then dealer to check this out just to have them tell me it's a "wear item" and I'll have to pay an arm and a leg to get it fixed. I recently did a 4 wheel brake job on the thing replacing the originals and I saw nothing to indicate a problem. So the pads and rotors are new all the way around and it only happens when I jump on the brake pedal. Thanks for reading, hope you can help!

That sounds like the ABS activating to me. Any ABS /Trac warning lights?

No lights come on when it happens nor have they ever come on and stayed on. In the past any time I've had to stop suddenly I recall a firm pedal with a pulse from the abs pump and no noise other then maybe some tire screeching. I jump on the pedal in this truck and the pedal suddenly gets soft then I feel some pressure back on it but no pulse. The noise is what concerns me the most because it is a really loud grinding/knocking but the wheels never lock up and I do come to a stop just fine. Maybe that is a normal noise from an abs pump on a full size truck? I've done countless brake jobs, replaced calipers, wheel cylinders, master cylinders, bent and replaced hard lines, but never had to touch an abs pump or control module before. This is also the first new vehicle I've ever owned, all my previous vehicles were 90s or older. Also the first full size truck I've owned with a tow package.

My ABS pump is loud and grindy like that. I get to listen to it aplenty on icy days. It's always worked fine and the pulsing isn't felt in the pedal. It just gets super firm. Pretty much like every other Toyota I've driven, just louder.

It's so loud that sometimes when it does the self-test at 12 mph it sounds like I lost the whole front skidplate.

Haha! Exactly "like ya just lost the whole front skid plate" SMH it's loud! but it does seem to be doing it's job. Thanks for the replies guys. I suppose I'll try to ignore it here on out. SW PA doesn't get many icy days like we use to but the deer are insane around here.

A little more history since I'm new here. My last vehicle before this 16' tundra was a 99' sr5 5 speed Tacoma. I loved that thing! I had 360k miles on it and it was still going strong before I traded up to this tundra. Needed the bigger bed and load capacity for hauling material. I've only used it once so far but the tow capabilities of it seem impressive too especially with it only being the 4.6. I'm Toyotas for life now though after how well the Tacoma treated me! Met my wife and she has a Kia got her to trade that in for a Rav4. My father being a mechanic for GM most of his life was diehard GM. Then I got that taco... He now owns a Tacoma himself as well as 2 Prius!
