500 mile octane test

I’ve seen several threads about fuel mileage so I figured I’d check it out and post the results.

I’ve got a 2019 TRDPro. It’s voodoo blue so it’s obviously going to perform better than other tundras, but it’s still worth sharing. Going from Haleyville, Alabama to Latham, Ohio. I am what most would consider to be an aggressive driver so this isn’t a dead on 55mph test.

I filled up with with 92 octane at a little under a quarter of a tank yesterday with mid grade in the tank previously. I’ll do 87 on the way home tomorrow.

So let’s see.

 

You need to do more like 500miles on each type, not combined. Also a battery reset with fuel change may be of some help as well.

Also make notes of temperature, humidity, wind resistance / change in wind direction, time spent I what speed rating, etc

I just buy $50 gas cards for $40 and instantly gain 2.5mpg

My favorite thread ever! Real life interstate speeds will return about 12-13 MPG in my experience. Even less in winter. Lol

 

Italian tune up is necessary.

 

I learned what that was a few months ago. Cracks me up!!!!!

 

I tend to try to beat the map’s arrival time. Really surprised it ended up at 14mpg.

I don’t often set my cruise control, but when I do, I set it at exactly 91MPH. Stay healthy my friends.

I stayed over 80 most of the way. Highway speed limit was 70 most of the way so I wasn’t too far over. I did slow down when I hit the curvy hills in southern Ohio. Kinda curious how the lower grade gas will be going home.

 

It’s tough to really compare - the wind and elevation differences alone might account for a lot of the differences you see. You’re probably better off using the truck as you would for a few weeks running each kind of gas and see if there’s any difference. My guess is you’ll see no difference at all. Now if you can find non-ethanol gas and compare it to the ethanol blends... you’ll probably see some small measurable differences.

No kidding. Here in canada our highways are 80 km for the most part. Few exceptions are the 400 series hwys go up to 100km and the trans canada in alberta/sask has 110km. I usually cruise in the 90s.

I like 60-65mph. Feels more relaxed and calm that way.

 

Haleyville is at a higher elevation than Letham (by about 300 ft).

When I first got my truck, I went to a nearby city and got something close to 30 mpg. Then I realized that my city was about 200 ft higher than the destination city. On the way back, the mpg wasn't pretty.

 

All I know when it gets cold my milage gets much worse. Is it because the fuel mixture is richer when the temp is 30 or below ?

 

I am curious about this as well. How can colder weather impact gas mileage so much?

 

I road tripped from upstate SC to DC scheduling stops to get Costco 92 octane. I stuck it at about 70 the whole way and hit up to 20mpg. Scientific? Pttthh...

 

I get 5.25% cash back with credit card. Wind direction and speed makes a huge difference in a pickup. Also temps. I got 18.8 on drive back from deer lease once with a big tail wind. Normal is about 17.

 

at least 2 factors that I'm aware of...winter blend (see this popular mechanics article) gas & cooler air is more dense (hence more fuel is required for the proper air/fuel mixture). <- the latter reason is based on my small engine experience...not sure how much it applies to automotive/EFI.

 

What is this gas mileage you speak of? It’s a truck. I fill it up run it down to 1/4 tank and fill her back up. Good times Good times

Which results in more power, but may be negated by having to push the vehicle through that same denser atmosphere. There are so many variables that I figure that the best a driver can do is to influence the ones that you can and the remaining ones are just luck of the draw. The result you get is what you get.
