I broke a front wheel sensor trying to get it out so it was meant to be. Now just to remove the bulb for the light.

Come on Jon. It's not that hard. It's 1 day of work. You got this!

If you pay to do this it's not going to be cheap. The ceramic coating I would skip for a old white truck. His truck was black and shiny so it makes more sense.

Finally snowed here so I pulled my ABS fuses before they get me killed. They won't go back in until spring.

Why its still standard boggles the mind. There isn't even any evidence that it makes cars safer. There is some that it actually makes them worse, which certainly matches my experiences with it on snow.

In emergency situations where normal people would sit on the brakes it provides advantage. But for people who actually know how to drive defensively it typically gets in the way.

It’s much better on newer cars though

    Statistics don't support that.

"On wet, snowy, or icy roads, where ABS is most likely to activate, the increase in fatal run-off-road crashes is a statistically significant 34 percent in passenger cars (confidence bounds: 20% to 50% increase). On these roads, all three types of fatal run-off-road crashes increase significantly for cars and so do fatal rollovers of LTVs."

    https://crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov/Api/Public/ViewPublication/811182

Its not just my imagination, ABS really is bad. Or was...I admit, I've never driven a 'new' vehicle with it.

It does seem better in newer cars that I've driven. It was terrible in my Titan and it actually seemed a little better on my tundra, but now I can actually try to stop and decide for myself. I hate not being able to do anything on a slick road. With abs I can't steer or stop so what's the point? At least without it I can induce a slide and kind of steer if need be.

I have always thought this was the reason also. It's one of those things that's made for the average person and is more of less lost on the minority of drivers that don't need help. Not unlike traction control.

I want to add to the abs conversation.

To my understanding early abs was garbage. Once my speed sensor on my passenger side of my 03 taco went out the abs tried to kill me several times until I pulled the fuse.

However I believe when maintained, abs worked pretty well on straight, flat, dry pavement. But I also was trained to threshold brake in the police academy, so I've almost never activated abs. Whereas the general public likely stands on the brake in panic mode causing them to lock, and they likely don't maintain their tires, so abs is helpful to them. If you don't know now you know tires are an important part of your brake system.

IKR? The trail gear ones are huge too. Not sure if I’m gonna stocker up the truck or not. It’s nice having a sticker-free vehicle after the accord being very heavily covered in stickers.

Looks great, if you don’t mind me asking, how hard was it to remove that light. Mine has been leaking and the whole dropping the headliner makes me nervous.

You remove it from the outside, don’t remove the entire assembly unless you have a leak or your replacing the unit. There is a butyl seal that sits on the truck/back of the assembly, that could be your leak, or there is a rubber gasket sealing the lense to the housing. But it all comes off with the 4 screws from the outside, and don’t mess with the red clips that protrude into the housing once the lense is off.

The biggest variable that a lot of these statistics fail to point to is distracted driving these days. People won't admit to it because then they are liable for some bigger ticketing or legal issues.

I've seen the videos of those guys in snow plowing through cones to prove that abs isn't better in snow because it goes crazy. I drive the same way with or without abs controlling the brake pedal myself if the abs engages and it isn't helping slow then I let off the brakes and control the brake modulation myself. People do an ABS on/off switch on the tacomas for offroading because they have it go crazy on downhill decents yet they are standing on the brakes. I've never had mine go nuts even sliding some in some pretty sloppy muddy decents I just controlled my slide and braking myself.

Oh and just to add to this all the high end big racing series use a very advanced form of ABS and traction control they have been since before we had it on the streets. Their tech is slowly trickling down it's just uber expensive at this point to be able to financially make it affordable for the avg joe.
That's key is knowing how to drive and brake under control. I learned this racing. General public panic brakes so even in snow, wet, dry etc not having abs you still end up in a slide.

Its not about controlling the slide, ABS works fine to control it.

Its about when you want to stop as soon as possible and the ABS instead wants to make sure you don't slide...so you don't slide...but you don't stop either. Nothing will ever beat four locked wheels when it comes to just plain stopping the thing.
