Thank you. I’ve seen them on a few others trucks and thought how clean they looked. Brand new they are like $600! Fuggetaboutit.

Did a search and made a call. Main consideration was if all the brackets/bolts were with the boards which are like $50 a pop if buying separately.

I’ve got another trick up my sleeve for the paint scheme on the boards which is still TBD.

After your comment on my thread I redirected to yours and love this! I will look at the Katanas as you have and start the process of rehabbing what I can. Very informative. Thanks!

1st Gen Tundra Tail Gate Assist Success!

Should work on any truck, as well.

All measuring is up to you. Pictures should be self explanatory to get the ball rolling. Hardest part was the ‘Hansel Move’ reaching through the gate hole to install the washer and nut. The double sided tape helps hold the washers temporarily until you can thread the nuts.

In retrospect, I’d try to move the upper strut stud hinge plate (mounted on vertical truck bed frame) UPWARDS about an inch based on post installation quarterbacking/guessing. Works great as is and it would be too much work to relocate and not sure if the moving up would make (a little) better action?

Speaking of action: The gate falls itsnormal unassisted speed from vertical to about 2/3 down which, at that point, is when the designed assist strut action kicks in. Brings the last 1/3 of the gate fall opening to a very soft landing. Closing the gate is normal until the last 1-2” of latching where you can feel the strut give slight resistance as it resets the chamber. Doesn’t easily latch closed like before, but needs a slight push to fully engage the latch/lock points.

Lots of weighed forces on the tailgate falling action, so I added 2 more bolts with underlying fender washers (for 5 total) in the above picture. The washers are very important to distribute the weight forces better back up towards the mounting bracket.

Took about 2.5 hours on this first prototype. Could do it in less than an hour next time.

    Total parts under $40

Side view mirrors shaking fix. Tools needed for tightening.

    Tips are T15 and T25.

Drive used is a cobbled together ratchet and 1/4 socket (from a Ghettique Collection garage sale find) to accept the Torx bits. Tightening the screws from underneath fixed the jiggle. Took about 2 minutes total. Still think there are some fasteners behind the mirror plate that could use tightening, but thats for another day.

Rustoleum Bed Liner Total Trim and Bumper Restoration

All trim in black. Used Dupli-Color Barcelona Red 3R3 for Toyota on the side door recessed parts. Should be good to go for many maintenance free years and no more need for trim detailing after washing. I used the Bed Liner on my OEM all weather floor mats last year and it restored the color an looks. Been holding up solidly over the last four seasons.

Painted some interior trims using the same products. This is an experimentation phase. Full job upcoming soon.

Had two different people (passengers) comment on my lumbar support mod I posted about last week using the food insulation. They had no idea until getting in that anything was done. Both said, ‘Wow this lumbar support is nice!’. Pic #2

I also said there was a bonus mod coming in which similar materials were to be used. I added insulation around the perimeter of the front seat cushions to bulk up the sides and leg edge. Pic #1

Both mods make a huge difference in comfortability at zero cost. In retrospect, one could cut in half a pool spaghetti floaty or similar half round foam object and stuff in these areas.

One more easy mod that makes the truck even better. Considering doing some seat track bushing cushions at a later date (for grins), as another mod.

I appreciate your clean lines. Nothing ever looks sloppy or cobbed together and that gives the work a real legitimacy. Can't say my work would be that clean.. Look forward to more..

Main thing is research upfront to create as many options as possible. Do as much of that as you can, then narrow down from your options. Once you commit, then leave some margin for error allowing yourself to return back to your starting point if needed. Never get to far ahead of things where they spin out of control.

Custom work is frustrating in that you are making a prototype and quality finished product at the same time. The rewards are worth it.

Very happy overall with the paint scheme. There will be some small items to be painted and tackled on another day. Also, some touch ups are needed in a few areas due to human error. Only doubt I have is the main door handle pull being so red and large, but its a total tear off to redo so its staying. Next time, I’d just paint it black.

You can see the floor mats I painted last year holding nicely. On the radar to complete paint job are the dome/map lights (in black) and seat belt tabs refresh (in red).

Wiped down/dusted the interior. Wiped all the rubber door gaskets. Added a few oz. of Seafoam in the tank.

Yesterday: Sprayed some PB Silicone on the seat belts. This is a helpful trick that makes them slide like brand new. If you haven’t done this before, then clean your belts really good with a degreaser to remove grime/salts/etc. and let dry.

Spray the PB Silicone on the belts by drenching. Let dry and thats when the magic happens. The stuff works after it drys. Slip slip!

I only did a refresh so noneed to drench.

Finally got the cig lighter light bulb converted to LED with everyones help here. Was originally going in to pull the rubber off which I did successfully. Upon reentry, my hand slipped and jangled the filament which ruined the bulb. Moved to plan B and had to mod the OEM socket as well as an on hand Partsham LED bulb itself to make it all happen. I’ll spare the details.

Took about 2 hours total and without removing the cig lighter itself.

Love that HUGE screwdriver! I have one from off the farm. Really handy at times.;)

Plus, it reminds me of the farm, which is always a good thing.

Night pic of ashtray light. Also, some other pics of the lights put in last year. The dome/door/map lights are high dolla Sylvania LED Zevo (bright and white). The door puddle lights mod is from Peoples Republic of China brand as well as the Partsam LED little bulbs used on ashtray from leftovers from last years work. The Climate dash bulbs are all LL incandescent Sylvanias (cheap and bright enough but not too bright for driving at night).

Hard to tell, but I removed the stereo lcd cover and Sharpie’d over the green diodes to tame their output a bit for night driving. Works good. Just be careful to not over do the black Sharpie.
