Hey everyone, I was driving the other day and had my blue driver on live data watching the rpm and speed on my 2002. What I found interesting is at 70mph the rpm was reading 2260. Ok, so the rpms are reading correct but the speed is not because I have 4.30 gears with no speedo correction. so I’m really going about 73-75. The interesting part to me is my truck would be running at those rpms and speed with stock size tires 245/70/16. Crazy, all I ever read about gears for the 00-04 access cab v8 was that 4.30 would be “perfect”. Shit, perfect my ass. Don’t get me wrong they’re ok but damn, I’m not even at “stock” rpms:oops: Knowing what I know now, 4.56 and 4.88 should be the only gears considered for a 2000-2004 tundra with 33’s. Thank goodness I’m 2wd and got my 3rd member from an old Tacoma. Would hate to go through the whole regear process and be stuck like chuck.

Approximately, my 2002 4.7L with 285/75/r16 runs 2150RPM at 65mph on the speedo (actual about 71mph adjusted for tires).

    3.91 gears, though.

Thanks for sharing PHM:thumbsup: When I bought my 2002 used, it came with 265/70/16 so I never knew what the rpm would of been with the 245 tires. My first adventure with bigger tires was p285/70/17 nitto terra grapplers at 45lbs. each and I could tell right away that the acceleration took a hit, but completely livable otherwise. Then I moved onto the falken at3w in the same size but the tread was way more aggressive and they weighed in at 52 pounds each. Oh man, I knew as soon as I hit the road I wanted to drive to the gear shop:confused: It was terrible, and I mean terrible. Trying to drive at highway speeds was nauseating. The 4.30’s have helped a lot. I think it was Keith (dirty deeds) who said when regearing you should see what gear brings you back to stock rpm then go up to the next aggressive gear. I’ve got a working 3rd with 4.56 gears. I’m seriously considering sending it to Zuk to be rebuilt with a tru trac.

I’d love to regear to 4.56 (seems the place for me from studies), but the price is not worth it for me. Guessing it be $2-3k easily and without a truck for a few days?

Not sure exactly, but since the 12 hole injectors and revising my transmission fluids up from prior services it seems the truck is peppier. The shifting seems better because it is better. Also, there is very little weight in the truck. Towing sees no noticeable change good or bad.

Then again, it could be all the other fine tuning gone into the truck this past year?

That’s awesome. I’ve been giving more thought to the 12 hole injectors. Regearing is very expensive, requires precise skill and special tools. The tru trac LSD alone is $550. And to think back in the early 2000’s to add the limited slip from the factory was only $300.

Yea, if you were buying new, that was a no-brainer...but the Trutrac is a much better LSD solution than factory IMHO.
