What do you guys find best to remove the chrome name plates and 3M tape stuck on fresh paint from side body moldings?

After a base/clear repaint job I noticed the side door nameplate is stuck on crooked. The nameplate stuck to the rear cab behind the window partially sticks past the rear edge. A buffer catches that and goodbye. Plus it just looks stupid if you take time to look at it.

The small body molding on the bed section comes off w/o much effort (tape stays on paint). The other side molding sections are peeling away from paint on front and back sections. Some of the tape sticks on the molding and some on the paint. All this is probably from their buffer while compounding to remove the very thick orange peel and dirt nubs after I refused paying.

I will use something else if plastic razor blades will cut into the fresh paint just as easy as the metal ones will, but I don't know and ask for help in case the auto body shop gives me a hard time.

If you live in Ft Lauderdale area and don't want to get burned, PM me and I can say where not to go and where I should have gone for a few bucks more.

I've used dental floss and a 3M eraser wheel to remove all the glue residue.

I have all kinds of fishing wire so will use that instead of razor blades. I have a heat gun but will probably burn the paint due to never doing this. Might do the same using a hair dryer as this is fresh paint and I will probably screw up by leaving it on too long. Besides, if I screw up I'm outta cash for paint after spending 3 G's...And my luck continues!

You will not burn the paint. Use the hair dryer and when your fingers get to hot then it's hot enough.

    I wouldn't use a 3M eraser on fresh paint.

Waxed dental floss sounds good also. Might try that first to not scratch the paint, if that's possible.

OK, my fingers feel pain, but hit me in the head with a hammer and I feel nothing. I imagine the hair dryer is on low and not right up on the nameplate or molding's edge while pulling it away. I'm a one man show on this, and it's possible? Anyway, I'll give it a try.

I did mine on high, about 1" away from the emblem. If they were just put on they should come right off. Any double stick tape left over you can probably peel it away or roll it off, just keep it hot.

You can try to lightly heat the crooked plated and maybe see if you can readjust it versus removal.

On your other plates you can use a credit card (think thin gift card) if the others above suggestions do not work.

Keep in mind I repainted my tailgate so wasn’t too careful with the removal and did it with very little damage, but I think I could do this without damage on a remove and reinstall using the plastic gift card with heat. Plenty of stores have these blanks after people use them.

How did you remove your nameplates on the tailgate to cause paint marring prior to using the credit card?
The name plate on the door is one finger tip or 3/4" higher than the lower side and is too much to adjust. I'll just fork out another 40 bucks to replace it and the few bucks to replace the "Limited" nameplate.

I imagine Goo Gone while doing this is OK. Yet some state it affects the paint. WD 40 is also stated as a good softener for the 3M tape and doesn't bother the paint, but those are only a few comments.

My tailgate needed painting due to ding and dent repairs. I removed the the plates for painting purposes.

Goof off works good and will not harm paint. Main thing you need to watch is the years of slime/crud stuck behind and inside the double sided tape. That is what will scratch things up. Plan on taking your time and do not be in a hurry. You got this.

No, My phone isn't expensive to show quality pic's. Plus I don't have a clue how to up load if the host doesn't make it a simple for dummies process. I have an old but good resolution Flip Video recorder, but Windows 10 doesn't have the drivers for it to work. If push comes to shove and this guy does me bad, I'll reformat the drive to Win 7 and get er done for all to see everywhere I make comment/review of this shop. High school auto body shop students back in the 70's where I went to school would have openly laughed in people's face, like this shop, calling themselves pro's.

Sometimes when you no longer like what your doing, it shows in your work. Or some find it natural to just do inferior work because that's the way they are.
I've known people like this and they're difficult to work with, Lol.

I just used dental floss, it worked fine. To get the glue off, WD40, worked great, multiple applications to soak into the foam of the tape, and scratched it off with a trim tool, no damage to paint

3M Eraser wheel is the easiest/fastest option. Amazon has their own version too for cheaper. I’ve used them for years to remove pinstriping and adhesives off paint.

Thank you, but this is new fresh sprayed paint. It will strip faster than a pole dancer in a strip joint if a wheel eraser is used. Yet, thnx, heard of that wheel being used successfully on any mfgr's older years hardened paint.

I wouldn’t touch the paint for several weeks... it takes time to properly cure... but you probably know that. So, I’d live with the crooked plate for now personally. And agree with George Costanza (Professional Hand Model) - first thing I’d try is to heat it up and try to adjust it. If it’s not too far off that ought to work. Sucks you’re disappointed in the work.
