When I put in 4wd Hi I get what started as loud clicking is now worse. Almost banging. I read to turn off traction control. I have no traction control button. Nor is any light of that sort on.

It sounds like a bad CV joint from your description.

Other possibility is a broken U-joint In your front driveshaft.

Does it change if you make a sharp turn? Does it change between accelerating, coasting or decelerating?

Yes. Goes from soft to loud no matter what. I was putting it into 4 Hi while truck was in neutral. Would that have messed ut up?

You should be putting it into 4 hi while in drive and rolling. 4 lo while in neutral stopped. Don’t know if this is your problem but maybe it’s possible it didn’t fully engage. It’s possible it’s just one of your actuators not actuating completely.

Yes know that now. 1st 4wd truck I've ever purchased. It also gives off burnt rubber smell when in 4whi

Not that I think it will solve this particular issue but it wouldn't hurt to grease your u joints, front and rear.

    That shouldn't cause any problems.

Burning rubber smell means something is getting hot. When that happens getting under the truck and feeling for what that is would be a fast way ro find the problem.

Alternatively, jack up your front end and turn your wheels, driveshafts, etc by hand and feel for problems if your comfortable with that. This will have to be in neutral unless you also jack up the rear.

I assume you are comfortable doing work like replacing CV axles and such yourself? If not you may as well just go to a mechanic, this is the kind of thing that should be easy for one to find. Either way let us know what it turns out to be.

It possible its something broken in your transfer case but that is a worse case scenario, still could be a lot different things at this point. You just need to start with the basics and systematically inspect your front driveline.

It reads like a broken CV at this point to me but its hard to figure out these things just from reading about a sound online.

Clicking and banging are classic cv failure sounds, u-joints are typically a dull growl that only happens while accelerating. Differential or transfer case problems can be just about anything.

Noise when it goes into 4wd and a now burning smell (burning smell = heat)? I would check your transfer case fluid ASAP.
