OP Tell you crazy? Nah, it’s your life, money and choice. Life is short retire young.
Wife and I retired in our mid 50’s, sacrifices and discipline along the way? Yep, but total freedom from the grind now is amazing.

Nothing beats titles in hand and paid off vehicle(s). Invest and do all you can to retire as young as you can. There is so much more to life than working your tail off to pay bills/debt every month. The hang over of debt on a depreciating auto purchase can be brutal emotionally and financially after the new vehicle smell wears off. We live by the choices we make. No expert here, just another view point FWIW....

I agree that buying used makes more financial sense but there's a peace of mind/ convenience component too. You have to look long and hard to find a used vehicle that has been well maintained, hasn't been abused, doesn't have high mileage and isn't being sold because of some problem. It's even harder to find a truck that meets these criteria (around here, anyway).

As you say, it will be difficult to rack up $40k in repairs but, if any of those repairs are something that take your truck off the road, you're down a vehicle until it's fixed. I toyed with the idea of buying something used but I would want to keep my car as a backup and I just don't have the space for that on my small suburban property. Also, buying new ensures I get the exact features (including colour) that I want instead of settling for whatever's available.
