2019+ External Transmission Cooler

How difficult would it be to install this? Or even where to mount it?

I think I'm going to tackle this job. Can someone help me with the proper parts. Does the cooler come with a thermostat or you have to buy that separately? I've attached a photo for reference. Also, will it still be possible to have the warming capability after the cooler install?

You already have part#1 on your truck. You bolt part#2 between #1 and the trans case. You retain the stock cooler/warmer. #2 is the thermostat as well as the ports for external atf fluid transfer to a standalone cooler. My local dealers all said that it would void my trans warranty, so I am holding off till I get some more mileage on my truck.

 

How does it bolt between 1 and trans case if there are the atf ports on one end?. I only put about 5000 miles on my truck a year. I do not forsee making a transmission warranty claim in 6 years. I'm going to order the part off ebay since its say cheaper and probably go with braided lines. I have to figure out how to route the lines to the front of the truck without cutting holes anywhere as well as making a custom bracket for a transmission cooler. Do you know when the thermostat opens?

They are voiding your warranty, after you install OE parts in the exact way an earlier transmission had. And they warrantied those transmissions. Beyond lame

If you examine the diagrams of Item 1 and Item 2, both show two o-rings below the part that seal the ATF passages. Item 2 is sandwiched between Item 1 and the transmission. Like @pickeledpigsfeet said, you already have Item 1, but I would buy fresh o-rings for re-installation. The tube nipples you see on the front end of Item 2 is for flexible hose connections to hard ATF lines leading to and from the front heat exchanger. Those flexible connections allow for minute movement and vibration isolation between driveline(transmission) and frame where the hard lines will be mounted.

The hard lines are also available from Toyota and are pre-bent to follow the available path along the frame, but they will be pricey. There are, no doubt, cheaper options, but I would check with @Roman first. Maybe he'll give you an extra deep discount to get this mod thread started in his direction. Using braided connectors is a good idea, but that will present you with the problem of having to adapt the thermostat (Item 2) hose connection nipples to threaded tube connections. Probably more trouble than it's worth imo; I would stick with Toyota's pre-2019 design in it's entirety..."if it ain't broke...".

I've read posts here that indicate thermostat opening between 210 and 234 degrees.

 

Thanks for the advise. I was wondering why the inlet and outlet tubes were bent. The only issue is I don't think they will reach to a aftermarket cooler in the front since they were designed to hook up to the radiator. Does anyone think the 07 tundra cooler is a good option?

 

The bent hard lines do look short, but you have to remember that the hood on these Gen3 is short...I'm thinking the transmission really is that close to the front grille area. As far as the difference in distance between the cooler being in the AC condenser and in front of the condenser (or radiator), how much further can that be?...5"? The final connections are probably again hose connectors, and you can adjust the length as you need.

As far as BTU capacity, I think the 2007 heat exchanger would be an excellent choice because it's a OEM quality part, and Toyota engineers spec'd it for the heat load the AB60 transmission will generate. On the other hand, the price is astronomical. Your 40K proposal will likely get the job done, and is sized for typical transmission heat loadings (do some more due diligence to be sure). I certainly wouldn't buy a heat exchanger smaller in cooling area than the 2007 exchanger.

These are "development" questions that will get answered in the "design process". I've been watching to see when one of you guys was going to step up...it's what I would do. Congrats on having some "heuvos".

 

My atf line going from trans to cooler gets hot at 194.

 

Don’t think the 2007 cooler will work. It was used 07-mid 10. They changed the style of the grill and possibly where it mounted since then. In 07, the grill was attached to and raised with the hood.

 

I figured it wouldn't fit. I want to go with a bracket for a cooler that looks factory and isn't a mess. I'll have to take my grill off one day and get some measurements of all the mounting locations and see what I can come up with.

 

I added another cooler inline when I had my 2010. I think it was a

$58 Hayden 679 Universal 11” Rapid-Cool Add-On Transmission Cooler to Enhance Cooling (not for direct replacement of the factory unit)

Hayden 679. They are only about $50 and work just as good if not better than stock and can mount in more locations.

 

Can someone answer this question... if the thermostat doesnt open until let's say 190 degrees how is the warmer suppose to work if it is closed since the warmer is after the cooler?

 

Are you sure its engine coolant? That doesnt make sense to me. What are the holes in the cooler with o-rings are for then? And where is the engine coolant going to warm the tranny fluid?

 

Oh I see. So technically the warmer will always be on no matter what. When the thermostat is added all it's doing is heating up the thermostat plate? Also, does the warmer block the 2 ports on the tranny that are suppose to be for the thermostat/cooler? I'm assuming the 2 holes on the plate are inlet and outlet for atf.

 

Okay thanks for letting me know. I guess when I take the warmer off I can expect some atf to come out of the ports. In addition to me finding a bracketing solution for the cooler I have to figure out how the atf lines are secured from the factory

 

Does someone have a picture of the atf lines from the cooler to the radiator? Just wondering how its routed and secured.

 

If you use the Toyota hard lines (see post #76), Toyota has provided metal clips at each end of the tube assembly. Those clips screw to something on the chassis. I thought they mounted to the frame, but from the location and orientation of the clips, and the position of the screws seems to indicate otherwise. You'll need to do a little research using a 2018. There may be some tapped holes on the side of the engine block.

 

The engine block has a tapped fitting for the rear one (I checked mine). Front one is hidden by skid plate. Constructing a stable mount for the cooler will be crucial. User named krohsis fitted a BM cooler to augment the factory one on an earlier model. Looks neat. Search the tundratalk.net forum for pictures.

Tundratalk doesn't show the model year data for the owner, but it's a Gen3 before 2018. He's adding an exchanger in series because the one built into the AC condenser is not big enough for his towing duties. It appears the ATF is entering the B&M exchanger first, flowing then into the OEM exchanger, then back to the transmission...or the reverse. Nice install.

 

Hey guys, I have been following these threads and I have a 2018. Using an OBD with my phone app, I’d say that the thermostat opens at just above 195.

Also, I am happy to crawl around and under my truck if you want any pictures of routing, connections, etc....

just be specific and then be a little patient, as I am a weekend/evening warrior.

 

Did this change (removal of the cooler) coincide with the switch to the new r1234yf refrigerant?

 

I'd love some pics of the routing of the lines if you have time!

Does anyone know if you need a spacer between the warmer and thermostat like the one attached?

 

Its there now. The thermostat replaces it. That spacer is the total heat transfer area you now have. LOL
