I run synthetic in all my vehicles. All engineered for synthetics and recommended to use synthetics. If I'm breaking in an engine it's getting traditional oil and zinc at least for the first oil change. Many engine builders are using this recommended method.

Since I live in sunny SoCal & avoid cold weather like the plague, I have used F/S (whatever is on sale) 5w30 @ 5k intervals in:
    '94 Taco 196k mi
    '05 Taco 188k mi
'13 Tundra only 40k mi so far.

And all three trucks saw plenty of towing duty.

NEVER had an oil related issue of any kind! :fingerscrossed:

Can I take this to mean manufacturers deliver their products to the dealers with conventional dyno oil in the crankcase for the sole purpose of "break in"?

I only know about the manufacturers I get training from. Volvo marinizes GM products for marine gas engines. When we get engines they come with no oil in them and they recommend break in on dino. When we get remanned longblocks from various distributors the send break in procedures using the steps I described adding the zinc additive.

It says not for passenger car use. I wasn't aware of that. I'm in marine so it's a lot different. Running 3000 to 4000 RPM under load all day long.

I use synthetic Shell rotella 10/40 cause it’s free where I work haha. Now calm down everyone I know it’s it’s off spec. I’ve been using this oil is every vehicle I’ve owned for the last 6 years without issue. Seems all my higher mileage motors like the viscosity too. :turtleride:

I've done it on a couple vehicles, but I usually time-out first as I don't put on a lot of miles, and change it at the one year interval.

0W-20 oil is ONLY AVAILABLE as a synthetic, it is not available as a conventional oil. Many, many autos come from the factory with synthetic oil (Corvette being one of them). It is basically an old wives tale that one should start out with conventional oils during "break in". Here is a Mobile 1 website that dispells this myth:

It is NOT A LOT for Mobil1 full synthetic 0W20 that I run in my 2017 with the 5.7 liter.

    A couple of points:

    - I have changed my oil every 10,000 miles. I have sent all 3 of the oil changes to date to Blackstone Laboratories. They say it tests not just great but...excellent and suggest going to 13,000 mile intervals.
    - When I pull the dipstick at 6,500 miles the oil is still golden and you can see the dipstick through the oil.

And now my lawyer likes me to include this part >>>> YMMV.

Thanks, I look at oil selection, let's say at O'Reilly, I see some oils labeled ( synthetic) for Toyota others not. Like gen 2 or 3. It's crazy

I don't think it's worth the worry or bewilderment to key on those marketing items like "Toyota" or "Honda" or "European Formula." Your manual tells you the weight of oil to use. Those weights are only available in Full Synthetic. Pick your brand. Me, personally, I have always (been driving Toyotas since 1985) used the same oil in a Toyota engine. That's just me but I do have a million miles on various Toyotas with no problems. YMMV.

Here's my last Blackstone Labs report if you're interested.

There is no Mobil 1 0w20. Regular Mobil 1 full synthetic only goes down to 5w20. You mean Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20, Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20, or Mobil 1 Annual Protection 0w20.

The Automotive manufacturers do not recommend what oil to use in D.O.T. vehicles. The E.P.A. determines what oil is to be used for best fuel economy not the engine longevity. The EPA doesn't want old cars on the road because the new cars are generally more efficient and emmitt lower emissions. The EPA would rather you crush your 10 year old vehicle then see you get half a million miles out of it.

This is also why the oil manufacturers have to label the high zinc marine oil for off highway use.

Toyota NASCAR runs 20w50 last I checked. We don't need nearly that much protection and we have many cold starts. I run 5-30 Mobile Synthetic in mine.
