03 Tundra high pitched whistle while truck is off!

This morning I woke up to what I thought was "ringing in my ears" only to later find out that ot wasn't me but my truck out front making this very high pitched constant whistling under the hood. Almost the sound of a boiling kettle that whistles on the stove. I cranked her up but it did not stop. I disconnected positive terminal and it stopped. As soon as I reconnect...it starts back. The sound is very concentrated between battery box and driver dash. Any clues out there for me to troubleshoot? I haven't done anything mechanical recently that i would have caused a side effect.

 

A recording of the sound would help greatly in troubleshooting if you can record and post a short video...

 

Bad relay somewhere?

 

Just checked my 2004 and the location of a chirp sound when I use remote to lock(1 chirp) or unlock(2 chirps) comes from that location or maybe more in area of brake fluid reservoir. If I could turn that chirp into a constant sound, it could definitely be construed as a high pitched sound. That said, could it be the chirp/beep horn? shorted on for some reason !

 

Start pulling fuses until it stops. That'll get you in the ball park.

 

That's probably the best guess. Should be on the fender little round doodle, possibly wrapped in foam.

 

had the same problem after i went mudding pulled the negative terminal left it over night and the ringing stopped has not started up again

 

Bubba and Fester....you guys steered me in the right direction! “Round doodle wrapped in foam” by the brake reservoir was spot on. With truck off, I tightened battery terminal back on and the screaming started. I went straight to the round doodle, disconnected it and instantly the screaming stopped! What’s the name of that part as I would like to replace it? Thanks so much for the help.

2004 FSM refers to it as a Wireless Door Lock buzzer

 

When I checked for the Toyota part is was like $80 but this is the same thing

After this problem gets fixed and as a side note: I taped over that hole in the Piezo with a small piece of blue tape to dampen the ‘chirps’ when using FOB to lock/unlock. The Piezo is too loud IMO, and the blue tape dampens to shrillness down to a silent click sound.

Perhaps every part does not have part number on it but I’d be surprised not to find a number and possibly words Denso if you took foam off

 

The reviews look good on the Floyd Bell. All types of Toyota users saying good things.

 

Might be another issue though causing the sound. Old Battery maybe? I know every time my security system starts acting up its caused by a dying battery.

 

Mine actually looks like a tombstone but I'm not entirely sure it's stock for a Tundra. It also stops working when it drops below 20 and the plan is to replace it with what I linked above.

 

Yeah, my comment was more to do with if it had a part number, does it google it indeed as a piezo/buzzer and nothing to do with Floyd Bell quality

 

I think my security system VP3000? is aftermarket dealer installed. Try searching with a local stealership and it pops up.

My old '03 did the same thing, I just unplugged it.

Sorry Fred but my resource for tracking down people passed away about 10 years ago - my Dad. His last posting while in the service was as the head security officer in charge of base security at the Trident Submarine base, Bangor, Washington. Following up on this, after retiring from the Navy, he took a position with the U.S. Marshals Service before starting his own security service in Oregon. I benefited from his connections a few times, though it was sort of improper (possibly illegal). But family is family, and one does what is necessary when the cause is just. It was through him that I learned almost EVERYONE has a file on them somewhere in the federal database, with the exceptions being rare.

I'll just have to pass on this hunt, as justified as it would be for not following through with a report, in triplicate and double spaced - notary not required!

 

Yep, I think you are right. Mine was not installed at the "factory" but rather at the "port", according to a small booklet on the VP3000 that came with the owner's manual. Yet there is a little bit of doubt, as the manufacturer's sticker that also came with the truck states the alarm was installed at the factory. Here's the rub...that same sticker says I have 60/40 seats in front, when in reality I have captain's chairs.

 

Same thing happened to me this morning; annoying as hell. Good info in this thread; I'll have to look for that piezo buzzer in my 02 Tundra as well and disconnect it.

I did notice that the dome light doesn't go on when either door is open like it used to do; only when you intentionally turn on that light via the switch beside it.

 

Very bizzare....connected that piezo buzzer back up 3 days later and it now works. Even the dome light comes on, but the light on the bottom of the driver door stays off.

The passenger door works fine too.

 

I had this happen on my 2003 AC . . . it got damp from the hood being cracked open over night. I unplugged it and it went away. I recently sold the truck to a friend and I was walking him through the truck and came across the the unplugged connection. I told him the story and plugged it back in . . . worked fine. I'd prob. recommend some dielectric grease on the connection to help prevent moisture intrusion.
