Another Tundra or Jump Ship

Well, I totaled my 2016 Tundra. Another vehicle lost control a couple of lanes over, entered my lane backwards and I had nowhere to go. After we got out of the truck, I swore I was getting another Tundra because no one was hurt and the airbags worked like a charm. Then I came back to this site and saw all of the issues with the cruise control and cam tower seals, which I thought Toyota fixed a couple of years ago. My truck was issue free for 52K miles. I'm debating on pressing my luck with a new Tundra or moving to Ford or GM.

 

GM or Ford. You must enjoy setting in the dealership wait on a truck to get fixed.

I have a 2018 Limited [20,000 miles]. I have had ZERO TSS issues. Cruise control works flawlessly. No cam tower leaks. YMMV

 

I'm thinking Sierra may be pulling our leg on this one.

 

Awesome!! Thanks, that's what I like to hear. I often wonder if the forums attract people who have the issues because they're searching for solutions, while the vast majority of people have trouble free trucks and never visit these sites.

 

2014 tundra here almost 80k trouble free miles no cam tower leaks. Hard truth, Toyota has problems, but way less and still much more reliable than all other brands. Also very lacking in technology but it’s not a big deal for me but it is for some people, I enjoy the tech in my wife’s 2020 Lexus RX 350, but nothing that makes me want it in my truck.

 

Look at Ford, GM and Ram forums for problem complaints as well, to keep it fair.

Seeing complaints of issues on a vehicle forum is a bit like seeing sick people in a hospital, but in my opinion the ratio of fun / BS to problem solving here is quite a bit better than average.

I can’t say that I don’t wish ongoing known issues like cam tower leaks were a thing of the past, but these trucks aren’t lemons either.

#1 I got 27k on my 19 Platinum and knock on wood, I have had zero problems and everything works as it should. The cam tower is a little over blown in my opinion. Not sure there are that many out there leaking but maybe there is.

I just came from a Ford. My truck spent more time in the shop that I care to admit during the 3.5 years of ownership. The problem wasn’t the issues themselves. It was the fact that the problems had been there for years AND Ford hasn’t fixed them. Furthermore the Ford dealerships were too incompetent and indifferent on the repairs. They’re happy to replace parts all day and take the payment, but actually fixing the problem didn’t happen. My recurring issues were frozen door locks (recalled 3 times), integrated wheel bearings (two dealerships, 5-6 service visits at least) and Sync jamming up (hardware replaced and software updates; multiple visits). That doesn’t include the other misc issues I had.

I haven’t heard of the cruise control issue, but I do know (and am watching for) the cam tower seal issue. Yes, that’s a messed up flaw that Toyota should have fixed years ago. But, you’ll find here everyone agrees the repair does fix the problem and Toyota has worked with folks that are past their warranty to help cover the cost. You won’t get that from Ford.

I don’t know the current deal with Chevy. I swore them off after I owned two of their trucks back between 2000-2010 and their looks today don’t even get me past the internet searches. If you get a Ford, don’t get the 5.0 V8. It was redesigned for 2018 and is having issues consuming oil. The repair is a whole new engine.

I've had several F150's. I sold my most recent one (2012), save some money and bought my '16 CrewMax. I actually liked the Ford but it had one issue that I really hated (and the primary reason why I sold it)....the turbo on the Ecoboost had a very noticeable lag in it. I didn't feel safe if/when I really needed to punch it and go. The truck had many more 'comfort' features relative to my SR5 but I don't need/want all of the latest features on my truck. My point is, I think you can find an issue with every manufacturer, they all have pros/cons. I REALLY like my Tundra!

 

I'd wait on an F150 purchase until they get the 10 speed fiasco worked out. No one seems happy with their transmission, there's a class action lawsuit going on regarding these. Lots of reports of slamming in and out of gear and not shifting entirely. Owners are getting the cold shoulder from Ford

 

I just bought a 2020, which will now be my third Tundra. I tried so hard to get comfortable in buying another brand truck since my other two where flawless. My wife was pushing me away from Tundra, she stated they are old and outdated. So I was on the hunt tried the GMC AT4, Ram and Ford. They all had some really nice tech, and the Ram interior and drive was really nice. So then I went on to each brands forums and WOW so many issues on the GM and Rams and about average on the Ford. I just got cold feet and stayed with the brand that I felt was the most reliable and great resale!

 

2018 SR5 Crewmax no issues.

Had a 2017 Chevy Tahoe LT prior to that. Wonderful vehicle. But spent so much time fixing issues.

 

You lived, to buy your first 2019 PRO. Go get er!

 

2016 with 39k. No leaks, no issues. Just change the oil and go.
Sometimes I swear it leaks gas.. Lol

 

If you didn't have issues with your Tundra before the accident, and it kept you safe during the accident, I'm not sure I see the problem here. Grass is usually not greener...especially with the big 3. And ESPECIALLY with a Ford.

 

I just have to say I was in the same boat before trading in my '16 with the '20. I was going 350 SRW, but after knowing the cost of ownership of a tundra vs. other trucks which are more capable and have more bells and whistles. I stuck with the cost of ownership.

My '16 had 112,000 miles when I traded it in, no issue.

Every manufacturer has issues, No one is perfect. You have to decide who has less issues. I believe the sensor issues are part manufacturer specific. Either someone has it or they don’t. No gray area. The cam tower issues are sporadic as well.

 

2017 Crewmax Pro here, 35000 miles, no issues whatsoever. Had my dad in it the other day (he drives a Chevy) and he could not get over how tight and quiet it still feels after 2 years - like a new truck. I'm sticking with Toyota myself as I am convinced it's a better overall product.

 

First, AMEN that you and your passengers are okay after that tragedy.

Second, I had a GMC Sierra before my Tundra. I wrestled with GM through my local dealer on so many issues:
- Leaking brake line
- Malfunctioning seat belt
- Misaligned box on the back
- Faulty TPMS on one tire
- Bubbling paint around third brake light
- (the biggie...) Continual oil consumption with the AFM (Active Fuel Management). GM replaced the engine and it STILL drank oil.

Aug. 2018 traded the GMC in for a 2015 SR5 TRD with 19,700 miles...not a problem yet with this Tundra and have been all over it like white on rice.
No vehicle is perfect, but from my experience a Tundra is much closer to it than a Sierra, Silverado, F-150, Ram, Titan, etc.

 

I was seriously considering a 2020 Sierra Elevation but what I've been reading on the GM-Trucks forum has made me reconsider. Some GM owners have had no issues whatsoever while others have had brake failure, ongoing infotainment issues, oil line failures leading to the engine running dry, creaks, rattles and other issues GM has been unwilling or unable to fix.

On the other hand, for ~$15-20k less, I can get an SR5 that has all the features I want and, despite having slightly lower payload capacity, worse fuel economy and no transmission cooler, seems much more likely to serve me well for 15 years and 100k miles.

 

I also read on the GM forums all the new truck brake failures. The worst part is they have their trucks at the dealer for weeks and weeks since they don't have the parts to even fix the issues.
