Recommend P-Rated A/T Tires

I know this is the opposite of what is normally posted, but there's a chance my Tundra may become my daily in the future, and I'm thinking it might need smaller and lighter new shoes.

It's currently running 275/70R17 E-Load KO2s (came on the truck when I bought it), so 1.5" taller and 55 lbs each. And they have been difficult to balance. Had a shake when I got them, and was still there after remounting on the 4Runner wheels.

If it goes to daily driver duty, I'd like recommendations for a P-rated a/t tire in 265/70R17. So just a tad taller than stock, but some are around 40 lbs. That could save 60+(!) Lbs of rotating and unsprung mass.

So I'm thinking Toyo AT2s, General AT/X, Nitto G2s, etc. Anyone have experience with P-rated a/ts and want to give a recommendation?

 

I'm more an an E rated tire guy myself but the stock Michelin A/Ts are probably something to look into. We have them on our supervisor units at work and they are great.

 

Yes, the nitto g2 Tire’s are excellent I have them on my 2006 tundra. P rated 285 70 17 (45lbs) I like them a lot. They ride real nice. You also can’t go wrong with Toyo at2 (nitto subsidiary)

 

The tires you mentioned are no slouches, but I went with another. I needed a wet road performer and after a great deal of research and favorable recommendations I chose Falken Wildpeak A/T3W all terrain tires in a 265/70 R16. I have not been disappointed. These tires have an embossed snow rated emblem, a quiet and comfortable ride, and are more than capable off road, while being a great daily driver. About the only short coming I have heard, though not experienced, is that there are better mud tires than the Wildpeak. Still, they are the best all terrain tire I have had under me, and I've had the usual suspects of Goodyear, Goodrich and Michelin. I highly recommend them.

 

Falken Wildpeak AT3’s, Goodyear Ultra Terrains or BGF KO’s are all top players.

 

These Hankooks are not p rated but they are only 39lbs. I had a set before and liked them.

I'm one my 2nd set of Continental TerrainContact A/T. I can't say enough good about them. They are very quite, fairly aggressive looking tread. Great manners on the road, excellent wet road traction. 265/70R17 comes in at 42 pounds.

 

^ what he said. I’m running the TerrainContact A/T’s in P rated (275/60R20) and they are great in the rain. Tread design isn’t super aggressive but they still look awesome

 

Check Out the Cooper AT3 4S, I like mine. Rides way better than with E rated, and I get 2MPG more for same tire height, but about an inch narrower.

 

Grow up and get yourself some Michelin Defenders.

@eversuck Seems a non-owner of a Tundra thinks us juvenile 1st generation Tundra owners need to grow up, and in doing so, acquiesce to his demand that we get some Michelin Depends, the tires for bed-wetters or more accurately, those who have trouble holding their pee? I think I could speak for the majority, here, by saying piss off! But I won't, me being the poster child for peace and reconciliation, with nary a condescending word to another.

If @eversuck wishes to ditch his 12 year old Sears Guardsmen bias plies for some of those Michelin Depends, by all means, he should. Then me thinks he should take his Sequoia with his new Depends and go to where he is wanted, or well liked. Okay, tolerated, and leave us juveniles at peace with our sub par tires.

 

I've had seriously bad luck with Michelin. Had to file a warranty claim with one set. The replacement set hasn't been much better despite regular tire rotations. I won't buy another set.

Also, OP wants an all terrain. Those are not AT's.

 

I’ve been pretty happy with my Kumho AT51s. They’re a little more street-friendly than some of the more dedicated all-terrains out there, but still do well off-road.

 

Been on Michelin Defenders (E-rated) and the predecessors for many years. Great in snow and sand. Top notch on street. They make it in a much lighter P rate, as well IIRC.

Looks like they have a P-rated A/T LTX.

You pay to play with Michelin, but its worth it.

I'm in the coastal southeast, so snow ratings are basically useless for me. If this happens wet traction, ride comfort (and ability to balance at all speeds), weight, and decent off-road ability are my main focus.

Another long term Michelin user here (25 years on trucks), and they continue to earn my repeat business. I use E rated Michelin XPS® Traction tires on my 4x4 2002 Tundra in the winter, but P rated LTX tires the rest of the time.

 

I had a set of lt toyo at2, they didn't perform very well on hilly slick roads (first few season's rains in socal). Not sure if they use the same compound between lt and p rated tires, or if nitto and toyo use the same compound. On level ground, they were fine though.

 

Ditto on the Kumhos....I had some LTs on a Montero...they were quiet on road and had decent bite on fire roads...cheapish too...

Falken Wildpeak AT3's all the way. Ive got them in the P rated 285/70/17 for better gas mileage and have had no issues.

They do! I've seen some recently. I just wish they had them with outlined white letters (not that letter color is a make-or-break for me).

 

What about C rated BFG K02s? I have them in that exact size you're interested in and had no problem with getting them balanced. They run about 46lb per tire and have the raised white letters.

 

I'm really tempted to sell my current tires to get some Wildpeaks. I wish I could see a set in person to see how they look.

 

Yes, I actually meant to mention them. I had the C-rated versions on my T100 and they were perfect. Definitely on the list as well, now that I know they work well on our Tundys...Thanks!

 

The do look nice (and the chunky sidewall sort of makes up for lack of white letters...gives it some texture), and more aggressive in person than pics show IMO.

 

Any chance you used them in the snow?
