I am currently in the market for a Tundra. My budget currently has be at around a 2016-2017 for an AWD Crewmax.

Based on online listings I am wrestling with a used Tundra or a certified used Tundra.

Yes Toyota’s have excellent reliability and you get a little more for your money going the used route but the extended warranty and new car financing on a certified is appealing as well.

Any thoughts on certified vs used?

    Thanks!

Well reliablity is there , lately there have been issues like cam tower leak and differential weep.

I would say better to go with certified for peace of mind.

CPO whenever available, but I still recommend a thorough 3rd party inspection BEFORE buying it.

Mine was a CPO buy. The added warranty is nice to have JIC.

I bought my 2012 Crewmax CPO in 2014 with 2400 miles. Got an awesome deal and the warranty is worth it.

Cpo usually gets you an enhanced warranty versus the standard used vehicles. Supposedly, cpo vehicles must meet certain specs as well

Its worth it to shop a couple dealers on a new one. In 2017 the difference between a new and used one was so small it was a no-brainer for a new one.

    edit:
if you have a costco membership, go shopping through costco auto. I did all my correspondence through email and got a good deal on a new one.

If you are financing, I’d look at what new vs used is going to cost. You’ll get better rates on a new one. Better yet, find a 2019 and get the 0% deal

I went CPO w/ my ‘13. Still have 4yrs or 30k miles (I’ll probably hit the miles first). Peace of mind was worth it.

I bought my 2012 in 2017 with 85400. They said 85k was the cutoff for CPO. I bought the extended platinum warranty and had it financed in on the deal. I am covered 100% until 135K miles. 0 deductible and it’s good at any dealership.
So far I’ve had a door lock actuator go bad and after an hour or two wait at the dealership I was back on the road free of charge.
I believe I paid more for the warranty than I should have but, having the peace of mind is more important to me.
I’ve driven Toyota’s all of my life so I am nothing but confident in my trucks reliability. However, I felt like it was worth it at the time of purchase and I haven’t second guessed it once.

My point is this: you can still add a warranty on to a non CPO truck so find a truck that fits your needs otherwise and start the wheelin and dealin.

My 2002 was purchased as a CPO in 2003, I had a lot of warranty & TSB work done to it before the CPO warranty ran out... it's still going strong 16 years later.

I bought my 2014 limited 4x4 with 8000 miles, now close to 80k and not a single issue. I don’t have extended warranty but since the truck is almost paid off I might consider getting one, look for a good used one that’s been taken care of, check the underbody and open the engine bay inspect everything before buying.
