There are several threads that come up asking whether or not the extended warranty is worth it. Most chime in and say "NO" because this is the legendary Toyota we are talking about here - the most reliable machines on the planet.

I didn't buy and extended warranty for my truck - mainly because I usually do most of my own repairs/maintenance, and because my previous 4Runner went for 100K in 8 years and had no problems at all. However, my Tundra sprang a cam tower leak at 14,000 miles while still under the original warranty. They fixed that, and I called Toyota and bitched a bit and they just gave me a Platinum warranty. That went a long way in my book. I have had more problems with this Tundra than I expected, so I appreciated that Toyota took that extra step.

Last week, my clock spring took a dive. I still have a bit left on the warranty, so I dropped the truck off today to see if it was covered. It was. They also replaced a seeping oil pan gasket. I didn't get charged a thing, however the bill was $2,600!!!!! Now, I don't know if that was inflated for the charge to warranty - maybe I would have gotten charged less if I didn't have the warranty (actually, if it wasn't covered, I would have just replaced the stuff myself). But still - that is a chunk of change for someone who doesn't work or can't work on their own truck. Pays for the extended warranty in one shot for seemingly minor work.
