So how often is everyone changing the oil in their Tundra's. Dealer says every 10K miles. I'm using full synthetic...

I'm assuming you mean 10k miles not 10 years lol

I just got mine and the dealer is giving a 2 year 25k mile maintenance coverage. They have me scheduled at 10k intervals to change the oil.

Why would it be different for flex fuel? Just curious. I do mine every 7K.

I am not sure but I am sure someone with more knowledge than me can give the reason for it. I just that is what is recommended by Toyota. I have a flex fuel 5.7 but since I don't run E85 and never will I split the difference and change every 7500 miles. When Toyota was paying for it I did it at 5K

Might be something to do with the alcohol in E85. Pure speculation here but running ethanol-based fuels in lawn and garden equipment causes fouling and other issues. I run only 100% gasoline in my small engines such as mowers, etc.

No ethanol eats up the fuel lines and any other rubber not designed for it. I have no problem in lawn tractor but any 2 cycle with aquarium hoses will develop problems. I run ethanol free in all small 2 cycles but not 100% in boat. It is designed to handle 10%. With synthetic I change oil every 10 even with FFV. Service writer and talked about FFV and he said there is no difference in the oiled components. Only reason I would change at 5 would be if getting gas bypassing rings.

Find another dealer. 10k miles is way too much.

Oil, air filter and spark plugs every 1500 miles. Runs smooth and gets me good mpg.

5k miles. Such is my attachment to my truck, I don’t think I would trust or pay somebody to change my oil. It’s the most important fundamental service you can do. And Oil is relatively inexpensive compared to the alternatives, so it’s
    my own form of “insurance”.
I drain the oil, get to have a good look around, grease the fittings, inspect, and hopefully catch things early.

What’s the saying, a happy wife...

Every 10,000 miles. Mobile 1, 0W20 full synthetic. I have the 5.7 liter FFV engine.

Now. The 10,000 (aka: non FFV) vs 5,000 (aka: FFV) debate. The 5,000 mile FFV comes from Toyota MUST HAVING TO ASSUME that you're running E85. They must. Which leads to the very inconvenient and nasty chemical truth about ethanol: it is shit for components including motor oil. If you DO NOT run E85 (I damn sure don't) then you're good at 10,000 non-FFV specified engine oil change interval. BUT TOYOTA CANNOT TELL YOU THAT.

    Class dismissed.

Anyone send in the oil for analysis like to Blackstone? I do my first change at 5k, Mobil 1 full synthetic then 10k and every 10k after. Gotta go with the Manufacturer recommendations they are probably overly conservative even at 10k. Manufacturer recommended maintenance is very conservative - for good reason...warranty!

My guess is with full synthetic you could really go way past 10k intervals.

I sent in an oil analysis of my oil that has 8k since last oil change on my 5.7 gas. I will post results and see what Blackstone says.

Oil monitors that track your driving habits, and tell you when to change your oil, are interesting to consider. Of course our Tundras are still stuck in the nineties, so you'll just have to trust that Toyota knows what they're talking about, and change oil on a fixed recommended interval...or not. I'm cool with their recommendations based on my experience.

Oil monitors work on an "algorithm" designed to consider number of starts/stops, frequency of starts/stops, trip miles driven, engine rpm, etc., etc. My GM cars all had oil monitors from just after millennial change, and now most cars have them. My GM cars would always wait for an oil change until 10K-13K miles.

My wife bought a new Honda Insight hybrid (upscale Civic) a year ago, and this car has an oil monitor. Clearly, Honda's algorithm is more conservative than the GM version...the car appears to want an oil change at 5K. Maybe this first oil change is designed to be like a "break-in" change at 5K, but that ain't going to be happening again.

And, just as another thread has discussed, a dealer 200 miles away has been bugging me with email to bring it in for service. Now that the maintenance reminder has been reset, we'll see if the dealer noise stops.

For the first two years I was doing every 5k full synthetic. Now I stretched that to 10k after getting a new job and greatly increasing my daily commute.

Out of curiousity, did your new commute change to more highway driving or is it similar in driving conditions?

whew. That's quite the increase. I could see stretching that to 10k with all the highway miles.

Yep. I had 57k on it June 4th. Today I hit 75k. I've debated selling my truck for an '18 or newer Camry a number of times. Despite the gas cost I keep coming back to wanting to keep the truck. I may commute for another 3 months - 2 years. I haven't made up my mind yet.

The good news it's a Toyota and will run forever and holds it's resale. The 4x4 does have a lot more maintenance than say a Camry however.

Thanks, but no, injector duration was in that first "etc". :D

Those algorithms are a black box for me...if I only missed one input (probably not just one), I would be pretty smart.
