What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

So, finally fixed the front leak and it was tested with flying colors in 2 hours worth of down pouring. Go to go I think.

For grins, put my hand in the back seat corner to see how it felt and it was wet! Removed the rear seat and felt around the slider and below touching things and it was bone dry back there. Water was just isolated in the corners. Found the culprit. If its only here...

 

If you are doing the VCG yourself I recommend doing one side at a time broken into back to back days. Each side took me about 3 hours total each. Do one side and test drive it to make sure you did everything properly. Do the other side the next day. Use ALL OEM PARTS.

If the stealer is doing your TB/cams, etc. then best bet is to let them do everything because the VC is last to perform task.

 

My advice, for what it is worth...keep your old ones and clean them up. Take photos of the new ones and record any and all issues about the new ones that suggest they are not authentic OEM. Ebay will want a thorough record proving why you feel they aren't the real deal before they will intercede. Be persistent and, as a last resort, let Ebay know that this issue is being watched by your brothers on this forum, should they need a little motivation in seeing a fair resolution.

By all means keep me in the loop. Should they prove to be counterfeits and Ebay is reluctant to intercede, it may be possible to convince them that it is not to their best interest to continue down such a path with this forum of hundreds watching the outcome. Bad publicity and boycotts may very well hurt their bottom line. This marketing and selling of knockoffs must stop, and it starts with Ebay being held accountable. My $0.02.

 

The dealer "TB/cams, etc." will be done first and after a week or so of checking how that went....I'll then enjoy the VCG work (don't drive much daily being retired except golf down the street, fishing down the road or autozone/wally world/Lowes when wanting to spend wifes money, so it'll take that much time to check their work out fully.

and yes only one side a day and ALL OEM PARTS including FIPG ....after 5 hours, starting in early am, it'll be time for lunch and a quick nap(priorities) before sneaking in a few domestic jobs before bread winner comes home
All this has been very therapeutic for this ole fart and I can thank/blame all ya'lls great posts for that

 

His engine being non vvti, the cam seals can be done without removing the valve cover. Chances are the dealer will not be removing the covers

 

Sweet. Can you post up a few FSM pages on doing these cams seals for 2002 V8? Might be something I tackle in the near future.

Not quite clear what you're saying here.
It's traveling into the body at the gasket holder hole & coming out inside the cab?
I've not been behind the interior trim, but would think water going in that hole would end up in the lower cab corner / rocker panel of the body. Purely a guess. But I sometimes get that same damp in the left rear corner, so i'm curious.

 

One of the first gen guys I follow just got this bed put on his truck. What exactly are the benefits of these aside from looking neat?

Does that mean the truck rides worse with the new springs? Sucks that you have a new noise as a result. Not sure why it would only happen in reverse.

 

The sides find down to make it a true flat bed. This was almost the route I went

 

I did not pull off that interior corner plastic trim in the back corners because its a pain and I had already pulled the back seat for no reason other to confirm its all bone dry back there.

If you (as I did today) squeeze your fingers between the carpet and under the corner trim where it meets the carpet you’ll feel and see evidence of water on your fingers coming from above on the back of the trim. I surmised the water entering from that high gasket hole (obvious visual water intrusion due to OEM caulk breakdown and full of gunk) AND dripping rolling/down onto the backside of the interior plastic trim leaving a perfect puddle in the corner.

I did pop out the back side door wire entry jamb gasket/grommet near the hinge to inspect and it seemed dry so I went higher and found that upper gasket plug suspect. I’m certain the leak is not from the back window.

It rained again fairly hard right after I finished the job and I felt for leaks by squeezing fingers into that carpet lower trim crevice corner and feeling the backside and it was dry. I’ll go back out and check it again and report back if its wet.

Edit: Dry corners so far and its still raining. I’ll report back first thing in the morning on the overnight status.

It looks like the sides and end also slide off, are removable. Neat transition to a true work truck.

Size, reliability and capability. There has never been a more reliable vehicle...two of the most reliable engines and transmissions ever put in a vehicle. The only shortcoming they had in stock form was the frame rust issue that seems to plague all Toyota trucks/suvs of that era...well that, and they were pricey for what you got...and by that I mean they were pretty bare bones...and their seats were so cheap feeling.

The 1st Gen Tundras really are like a 1.5 1st Gen Taco...and that makes them way better for towing, more comfortable, more powerful, bett

And are completely removable so it's an actual flatbed and can be used for flatbed campers like this as well...

Put back together with the new intake. I think the bumper was really making it look wimpy. Probably not going to put it back on unless I cut the bottom half off.

 

Ordered up some paper gasket material and 2 other kinds just for fun. Brake booster has one or two paper gaskets that seem hard o find at a reasonable price, so gonna cut my own if mine are ripped.

hmm well apparently they dont have instructions for the seal. only cylinder head removal.

this video shows it off.. Buy a nice pulley holing tool to do the seals. dont want a flimsy one and the cam slipping and valves hitting the pistons!

set the engine to TDC, then move it some more for the mark lines up with the timing belt idler pulley bolt and you shouldnt have to worry about the valves hitting the pistons (none should be at TDC at this point). Then when you go to line the timing belt up just use the timing marks on the new belt and the pulleys

How long did it take to remove the stock bumper? I'll be pulling mine to make room for this one Tuesday or Wednesday

 

takes like 15 minutes for me at work.. its not too difficult granted im on a rack and replaced a few of these frames.

 

Maybe 10 minutes but Ivey had it off before and it was never secured exactly the same as factory after I did the fiberglass fenders. No idea how long it took the first time.

 

Jon, do you know how much more this one weighs than the factory bumper? I can't decide if I want to go plate vs tube. Trying to keep weight down if I can.

 

You could always go aluminum if you got enough money haha
I'm not sure how much either weighs. But the bumper I have feels a little lighter than I expected it to be
