I’m looking at purchasing a 2006 limited. It’s got the 4.7 I force, 4x4, all the bells and whistles your typical ‘06 tundra would have. It has 220k miles. The guy said the timing belt has been changed in the past, but doesn’t know exactly when. The sticker showing where it has been changed doesn’t have a date on it either. This guy is honest and I trust him, so I don’t think the truck has any major issues at all. He has taken really good care of it, but said I might check out the timing belt just because of not knowing when it was last changed....so is there anything in particular I need to listen for or look for to figure out if it needs changed or not? Is it something that you just don’t know it’s going out until it’s out? Any advice is appreciated.

If you have no other evidence, then you have two options that may help. Get the VIN and register it on the Toyota owners website... (https://www.toyota.com/owners/)...then go look at it's dealer service records...if it was changed at a dealer, it will most likely show up there. Also, some non-dealer service centers report to Carfax...I had a 1996 4runner that I bought who's carfax showed a timing belt replacement at a local service center. If neither of those show up, it doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't done. If you can't find proof it was done in the last 90K miles, personally, I'd do a full timing belt/water pump replacement for peace of mind. Good luck...

I second everything said above. Do a history report and if nothing shows, start with a clean slate and keep better records than the previous owners.

I've done three gen1 timing belts and you really don't know what condition it's in until you pop off the covers. By the time you get there, you may as well just change the belt.

The first timing belt/water pump should have been done around the 100k point and the second around the 200k point which was not that long ago miles wise. I would think he would have remembered that so I doubt it was done. I would add the cost of replacing them in my budget for buying the truck and replace them.

Also check around the water pump with a flashlight for any leaking.
