I run borla duel on mine.. had it for 6 years I'm happy with it when I drive it.

 

That one doesn't include the headers.
The only difference is he's now offering it as package deal. Not sure if that means a slight savings value or not.

@FirstGenVol if you move to CA or the like, you may want to keep your truck registered to an address in TN. In CA the long tubes would fail visual inspection if the smog guy is serious.

 

I got my Thrush Weld muffler installed this morning. It’s louder than the Dynomax Weld and it has a deeper tone. The Thrush is almost half the size of the Dynomax so naturally it’ll be louder. The sound “burbles” and rumbles noticeably on down shifts. You can hear the deep sound when accelerating slowly in the cab, but it’s a long way from annoying. Upon WOT it roars slightly, but tapers off to a nice mellow rumble from 55-75 mph. I’m thinking that if I had some headers like I had on my 2000 Tundra it really would give it the tone I’m really looking for.

I’m sure after it breaks in it’ll get louder. From my experience with past muffler purchases on cars and trucks that’ll take 2-3 months depending on how often I drive my truck. Liking it so far though!

 

I am running a dual in dual out Magnaflow 12486 with 2.5" custom bent tubes. It sounds pretty narley, but it is getting a little quiet for me. People who ride with me say it is aggressive though, but nothing compared to a true dual with glass packs that was originally on there haha. It will sound better with time!

 

I'd like to hear form some first gens with a dirty deeds exhaust. Seems it's all second gens.

Anyone here that plans on removing their catalytic converter please let me know. They are probably worn out and not much value so don’t expect me to buy them. I’ll pay shipping and my intentions are experimental.

@Darkness didn’t you remove your cat? Probs why you get a bit better MPG? I’ve heard a bit better performance is another attribute. Sounds louder, too.

 

@Professional Hand Model no, I kept my cats. I removed the resonator and swapped mufflers. California likes cats.

 

I thought the trucks run better WITH the cats. Is that not the case?

 

That is the case and the case for most vehicles unless highly modified.

I gave jba my headers to copy. There just wasn’t $$ in making my own headers.

Sorry I just noticed this. The theory behind it is your vehicle was designed to run with the cats installed. It was tuned from the factory with those installed for maximum efficiency and power. The most restrictive part of your exhaust is the muffler.

Modern vehicles these days are pretty much setup from the manufacture with the most usable horsepower. They aren’t as restricted as they were 30 years ago. Take a look at a 1990 Chevy 1500 and 2000 Chevy 1500 and you can clearly see the difference. Fast forward another 20 years and it’s even bigger. Hell, my duramax from factory makes 900+ ft/lb of torque when the original duramax was about half of that. My 2016 has more restrictive emissions equipment to boot. It has even been proven that the OE intake most of the time flows better than the after market cold air intake systems they sell. Some vehicles even lost horsepower when installing a CAI.

Unless you have forced air induction (turbo/supercharger) you aren’t going to notice any change simply by removing the cats alone. I can almost bet with the back pressure you lose, you are losing power vs gaining.

 

by removing the mid pipes in favor or bigger diameter mid pipes with no cats you actually gain 15 hp and 30 tq to the rear wheels over stock. And the truck is significantly faster...... as long as you stay on the gas. Because the low end torque loss is so bad you can’t even use 6th gear anymore.

You gain +2 gears when you remove the cats..

Is this the same feeling you would get when you put JBA shorties on a first gen? Please define low end torque. Off the line? keeping a steady speed? Or both? Thanks!

 

JBA shorties on my 2002 have been excellent, Zero loss in torque.

 

I have them on my 02 as well. My only complaint really is the location of the o2 sensor on the passenger side. I have read on other post that the “fire cone” collector helps provide a smoother path and perhaps acts more like a long tube header.

 

I have over 130,000 miles on mine, and they have not given me any problems.

Can you elaborate more? Maybe I’m misreading your post but you say you gain 15hp/30lb tq but then say the torque loss is bad?
