The best thing you could do is talk to Keith from dirty deeds. There are a few simple things you can do. One is a coolant bypass if you live in a warm-ish climate. You basically bypass the coolant going to the throttlebody which will lower intake temperatures. Another that I hear just all-around makes the truck run better or his 12 hole fuel injectors. He can definitely lead you in the right direction. And he will also personally accept phone calls.

 

@lsaami ...Oh, but I've put this one to rest, having lost all interest when I confirmed what I heard here about engine longevity suffering a hit. It just isn't a trade off I would be willing to take with my truck. Let's see...a fairly large buy-in, the probability of an even larger install expense, decreased MPG, engine detonation and/or shortened engine longevity. Too many negatives to hold my interest.

 

Well at the end of the day this is a Tundra forum. It’s something easily missed what generation truck we’re all talking about. I know it’s obvious at the top of the page, but it happens. Even our own moderator who is near and dear to us, suggested a supercharger. Even though they are probably nonexistent or very hard to come by. It seems he assumed second GEN+ as well.

Back on the topic, you've got to be realistic lookin get this. Can a turbo be bolted to a first gen at low cost? Sure. But then how much fuel do you need? Which injectors will work? Will your pump handle that? What to do about the tune since Bullydog doesn't exist on a first gen? There is only Unichip and even then you need it tuned.

You can probably get by with your fuel pump and upgraded injectors if you stay under 8psi. Throw in some colder spark plugs for good measure and get the Unichip tuned. Probably in the ballpark of $3k which is less than the elusive supercharger but takes more skill and labor to install.

I've had a lot of friends who built budget, thoughtless, turbo kits for their hondas and such and they all ended badly. Good news is Honda motors are pretty cheap to replace, not quite the case for our 4.7s.

The TRD supercharger is hard to come by. It was discontinued because guys were bolting up a power pulley and boosting the hell out of their trucks, then when they went bang they bolted up the stock pulley and tried to warranty like they don't k ow what happened. nothing to do with VVTi

The horsepower to dollar factor is a deal breaker on these trucks. You could spend $3k on bolt-ons and barely hit 30 more horses. There is no tuner worth getting on a naturally aspirated 4.7

 

I would like to get the 12 hole injectors for my Sequoia. Keith highly suggested them.

 

What plugs run colder than iridium? Or do the non vvti 4.7 engines not require iridium spark plugs?

 

No vehicle requires iridium, it's used on Toyotas because they last a lot longer than copper and the reduction in change intervals makes them cheaper long term.

I wouldn't go colder on N/A, there is no benefit. On my turbo car I run a colder copper plug and replace them every other oil change, but that car spends a lot of time in the 20psi range.

 

A couple of us have em. I noticed a slight MPG increase from 260-270 miles before my gas light came on to 290-300 miles. And even with my 295s and 4.10s the truck moves just as well as it did on stock tires. The only other performance mod i have is a flowmaster 40 muffler in place of the stock muffler and resonator.

I read somewhere the vvti required iridium. That's why I replaced mine with em when I had the injectors and timing belt done.

 

It will run fine on copper but that would get expensive swapping 8 plugs every 5k miles. These trucks "like" NGK and Denso iridium.

Best (cheapest) way to make your Tundra truck faster, without all the obvious things mentioned above, is to reduce weight. Remove your spare tire and all unnecessary other items from inside. I’ve read removing your catalytic converter helps with (very small) performance gains, as well as MPG.

The beauty of the 4.7 is its reliability and longevity. Keep her tuned up and enjoy.
