I won’t lie, the idea has crossed my mind! :angrygirl:

My goal is to be a better driver...drive better with this truck on the trail.

Something @Sunnier said to me that stuck in my head, along the lines of “I feel like the truck is doing all the work”...So I will make this setup work until it doesn’t...

I can’t remember what material exactly but it is partly metal and it is crimped on so if you ever need to take it off paint won’t go with it.

When I get front bumper put in I will ask and report back.

It’s basically a vinyl metal edge guard. It’s shaped like a U and reinforced inside of the vinyl with metal. I used to use this stuff on my work truck when I had it. Some older cars will have it inside the door jam at the pinch seams. They come in various sizes. I typically pinched it before I pushed it onto the metal. Instead of sliding it onto the metal and crimping. https://m.grainger.com/mobile/produ...MI0J7Mrfvp5AIVTNbACh2Tnw9sEAQYDCABEgIiPPD_BwE
this is just an example and there are many different variations just like weatherstripping options.

No problem! I do suggest after you cut the metal, knock down the sharp edge and give it a coat of primer and paint, just enough so that the edge protector metal guard will still cover it. Just to keep you rust free.

With blue painters tape just leave about a quarter inch of metal exposed. Scuff it up and prep the edge, maybe something like self etching rustoleum primer and some paint closest to your color. You can clear it if you want but probably not necessary since you will be covering it with the guard. I guess this is overkill. But I hate rust!

What I have been wondering is how they do paint match door edge guard because my wife has it on her camry and it is exactly the same color can hardly see it's there. Unless real close and I'm hoping it's not just painted over and will chip some time.

It very well could be painted. I haven’t looked very deep into door molding trim edge guard. Usually that stuff doesn’t have metal in it. I did have it on my previous truck. It was a dark MGM color so I just used black. And it was just held on by sticky tape. I have seen a few colors at the auto parts store. Usually black, white, clear and chrome. Please for the love of God don’t do chrome! And looking on Google I came across blue and red. I wonder if certain manufacturers offer a color match option at the dealer. I have also seen the trim molding start to deteriorate similar to the notorious Chevy door ding protector fade.

This is a real thing. I really enjoyed rocking my big booty 2WD 3rd gen on trails where others relied on their 4x4. I grew up driving 2WD’s in snow country, so my lines are pretty good for not getting stuck (never put both front tires in the same trough), but the way to get good at overcoming obstacles is by practicing. The more your truck requires you build skill as a driver, the better in my opinion.

Hulk is a magic truck, I basically point the way, and the truck walks right up. :curls: Super fun, but I still want to improve as a driver.

This weekend, I played with a bunch of Tacomas and 4Runners. Most or all had lockers, and the drivers had various levels of experience.

Hulk does not have a locker, but has LT so all the tires usually stay on the ground + V8. :muscleflexing: @eccracer104 was spotting me up an obstacle, slow and easy the way it ought to be done to crawl up. We’ve still got some tuning to do on the rear LT MCM cantilever + Kings set-up, and the rear is 5” narrower than the front, so Hulk’s rear end kinda “hops”. Well I just watched another driver take a less-than-ideal line, slide over, and drop his diff on a massive rock so, knowing LT + V8 would get me up before Hulk hopped over to a different line, I used skinny pedal instead of finesse. So I missed the learning opportunity. And with a dozen rigs waiting to try the same obstacle, there’s no opportunity for do-over’s. Meanwhile, another gal with a mainly stock 4Runner made as many as 4 attempts to get over the 2nd obstacle, trying over and over again with different approaches. I know she was probably stressed, but never gave up, and made it up! Which was a rush for everyone in the group. That kind of learning, and character development :p only happens through challenge.

I LOVE the Hulk! (And my kid loves riding shotgun, feeling invincible— which he did not in the 3rd gen. And I want him to hang out with me.) Also, I know my personality would bring me to LT and I’m a proponent of buy once/ cry once, so I’m happy with my head-long rush into LT. But generally, yeah, there’s excellent learning and experience that happens when we’re challenged. 2WD, then a stock 4x4, then a mid-travel ‘til you’ve done all the truck can do with the best driver- That’s how I’ll recommend people learn.
