Has anyone had this issue where the bolts where the front suspensions attaches to the frame are rusting? Is this normal? I don't think so and I was just wondering if anyone is aware of any service bulletin on this or a recall. Thanks. 20191001_150400.jpg 20191001_150343.jpg 20191001_150400.jpg

Are you saying that is normal? I'm little concern since my truck it's a '17. No much salt around where I live either.

    Its definetly normal.

    Mine looks just like that.

Those bolts see alot of road grime, moisture, and whatever else you drive over.

    Just surface rust.

Yes. It is not coated the same as the other ones. It is cosmetic, you will more than likely never remove that nut for any reason

That looks like normal rust on an unprotected part, salt, or no salt. I had huge problems with rust on my last truck. Trying to prevent this again on my new Tundra, have a look, and think about an undercoat treatment that best suits you. ;)

Thanks for the post. I had done a bit of research and went with the Amsoil MP product last year. I prepped with a pressure wash and then hand wash (yes-a real pain) and rinse. Then gave the truck 2-3 coats. After a long Maine winter and trips up and down the state, I was pleased this spring when I washed and inspected the undercarriage. There was some very minor brown spots in places you would expect (as the OP pointed out) , but overall I am happy with the results, so will repeat the process and use what I have left soon, as my winter prep. I think it’s all in the prep work/ make sure you have a clean surface and go to town. Prevention is Key. It’s a bit old school, but when I am under the truck doing maintenance, that extra gob of grease finds a home on some exposed threads somewhere...

I'm thinking you live in a wetter, more corrosive environment than you believe; the washer and all the surrounding zinc plated studs and nuts are also showing corrosion.

Corrosion is to be expected, but if it's going to bother you, use one of those "cosmoline" products shown in the great video above to spot-treat all your zinc and unplated chassis fasteners. Of the three products, I liked results provided by the CRC the best, but as he said, whichever is cheapest. The "cosmoline" products are most like the old Ziebart rust protection; they dry to a waxy consistency, will not easily wash off, won't attract as much dirt as some of those other products, but will always remain slightly tacky to the touch. For your conditions, a spot-treatment is probably a one-time event that won't need to be repeated.

PS... that doesn't hold the coil over assembly to the truck... that holds the top hat on the shock... retaining the spring. The 4 bolts hold the top hat to the truck. They all corrode, and that center one corrodes first.
