Has anyone installed a backup camera in a first Gen Tundra?

I really appreciate the convenience and safety of the back-up camera I have in my 2015 vehicle and would like to hear from forum members who have installed one in their First Gen Tundra. How has it worked out and would you recommend it? Brand names of the ones to buy and the ones to avoid would be especially helpful. Thank you, Ron...

 

I installed the Accele license plate camera which is hooked up to my KENWOOD headunit. Works well and has a great picture.

I just drilled a hole where the tailgate handle is .removed the plate off the back of the tailgate and ran my wire that way ,I can hardly even see it and it's wide spread when they're up higher it seems like it works better ,very clear will try to send a picture later from the inside where the camera shows.

Crutchfield was selling the cam built into the frame for $129 when I bought the Sony head unit that would integrate with it. Boyo was the brand. Any of the stuff on CF is decent stuff and they'll walk you through the install.

 

I was just wondering if the first gen were prewired also.

With the camera mounted inside the handle area, can you see the trailer hitch ball? That would be a great help hitching up the boat.

I ordered a back up camera with it's own seperate screen, it should arrive and be installed tomorrow if I can find the time

Yes, with that camera I purchased and installed you can see the ball.

 

Can you take a photos of what your back up screen looks like in reverse. I was wonder if you can see the hitch for backing up to trailers?

kind of late to the party, but I highly recommend running a higher quality shield RCA to reduced any noise/lines from camera to the receiver.

 

I've never installed one myself but have had them professionally installed on 4 or 5 vehicles. They work great, although sometimes the sun causes a glare on the screen and you can't see it.
Also, the aftermarket models do not show the curved lines when you're turning while backing up that the factory versions do.
The cameras are helpful for backing to a hitch but while you can see left/right orientation the front/rear is indiscernible, so you have to get out of the truck a few times to see if your ball is under he hitch if you don't have a helper.

 

Where'd you tap into for reverse? I have the same pioneer

 

I have a Pioneer head unit also with a license frame camera and tapped into the backup light wires at the tail lights.

 

That would be ideal. But I'd have to run a wire from the dash to the tails to do that. I wish I could just run it to the camera and tails.

Also I installed my camera and now my sound doesn't work and my camera doesn't turn on is reverse or manually. This has been the install from hell. I'm so frustrated I'm almost ready to pay some asshole to fix.it.

 

Guess I got lucky. My camera just had two 3 foot wire leads for the camera power and ground that I ran to the backup lights and a RCA cable that had to be ran to the dash to connect to the head unit. I'm not an expert on these so I figured that was how all camera wires were.

Is there a way to separate the camera power wire from the rest of the wire loom back by the camera so you can connect it to the backup light wiring more easily.

 

I just put on in my truck this weekend. Like you, they are almost a must have now-a-days so it was one of the top things to do once I bought this truck.

They are fairly simple to install if you are decent with wiring. It really helps if you already have an aftermarket radio installed. Basically you will be connecting the yellow RCA cable to the back of the radio (CAM INPUT), then connecting the gray or purple signal wire to the tiny red wire coming off the RCA cable, the other end of the tiny red wire goes to the positive side of the reverse light, the black RCA style cable is ground and voila.



I bought the radio and camera off Amazon for $65. The radio actually included a tiny little camera like the picture about but I prefer the license plate mount so I bought a separate one.

I bought a Kenwood DDX26BT that came with a backup camera for free. I have a replacement tailgate without the keys to it so I decided to just take the lock mechanism out, make the hole larger, and mount the camera there. IMO it looks really good.

 

Any chance you have pictures of the unit installed on your truck and what the image looks like on your display?
