Smoked Rotors...

So apparently I warped my rotors at the Tundra meet this weekend, which sucks, but I get to MOD my brakes! braided brake lines and TRD pads, but which rotors you guys running? I’m not going stock so let’s hear what you recommend and why....,

 

How did you warp them?

 

Man, could have picked my brain over a beer by the fire!

I’m very happy with Stop Tech. Nothing but good, and my brakes have held up well with my two foot driving on trails and with fast and hard braking during desert runs.

 

You know I'm not sure but we were on some steep stuff and doing crawling over rocky terrain. I was on the brakes a lot. I would set the E-brake and get out and look around the truck a few times, but we were also going fast on some dirt roads and I would slow down quickly for for the occasional obstacle, but the e brake is in a drum correct? I didnt think that would warp them...

I tow a large trailer and I drive fast on the roads but at 63,000 miles everything was very smooth and in good condition until today.

I didn't expect that but on the way home I could feel the truck shaking while braking. Smooth as glass the rest of the time.

 

I didn't know until after we headed down the hill! Dude, that jeep at the bottom of the hill got mashed! Anyway, so which kit are you running? Slotted? Drilled? Cryo? Pads?

I have their slotted rotors with their street pads.

Your “warped” rotors are actually brake pad compound being deposited on the rotors unevenly. The pad dries and solidifies to the rotor surface creating that uneven pulsing feeling. Typically occurs under hard braking (getting the brakes extra hot) and then holding on them at a stop.
The hot pad on the hot rotor cool slower than the rest of the rotor creating an uneven surface.
Best practice to avoid this is after hard heavy braking to drag the brakes after you’ve stopped so the hot pad is cooling over the entire rotor.

The cryo rotors are essentially hardened. Super heated and super cooled. Creates a longer lasting rotor.

 

I noticed my brakes do this as well after going off road. Always seems to do it on the way home. I do try to bed them in a little to get some material placed on the rotors evenly. It does seem to help. For some reason after I wash my truck I will go do some similar stopping to The bed in procedure. And then my brakes are great until the next time I go off road.
