I never had the disconnect issue but I did raise hell about the brake controller not braking the trailer. They did some update to it and it worked like it should after that.

I had the disconnect error on my 2019 and the TSB reflash seems to have solved it. I towed about 1200 miles a couple weeks ago without a disconnect and the brakes also seem stronger. Before I had my gain set at 10 and the brakes didn't seem to help much. Now I have the gaina 5 and I can feel the trailer brakes working.

Hey guys, I’m having problems with my brake controller but not with it saying trailer disconnected, mine shows the trailer light on but the brakes don’t work and when you try to adjust the brake gain it says trailer brake control off. It’s a 2019

No problems with mine at all. Set the trailer brake and gain and it works as it should. I can feel the trailer grab but it’s not too hard unless I have the gain all the way up. Been towing since 2016 with no concerns yet. I have not had an update for it ever. I just set the ibc to whatever the setting is for output when using the trucks brakes. Tested using dvom and tested using trailer emulator to confirm and then verified on the trailer brakes were active while braking. After that set the gain and never have looked back

I’m getting the error message on my 2016 1794 crewmax edition and I’ve never hooked up a trailer. It has about 8600 miles. Dealer says they never heard of the problem and it’s out of warranty so I’m on the hook for all diagnostic and repair costs.

Just did a camping trip with weekend, 2016 and used the factory controller...No error message, saw the camper- trailer brakes worked fine. Turn signals did not. Running lights and brake lights worked ok.

So...not real sure what to check on that. Everything works properly when I hook the camper up to the 4runner with P3 controller.

Update here. Still yet to have any problems with mine. Lights all work. Car haulers brakes work. Towed a camper and the trailer brakes worked as well. Only thing I have adjusted so far was the gain to match my load.

if your lights work on a different car check the fuses for the lights on the truck. Or get a trailer emulator to test the pins at the connection.

Where did you get the trailer emulator?

Not sure if anyone is still on this thread but Toyota is still not doing anything to fix this problem. I called corporate today and there are no "customer supports" in place as of now. An after market brake controller will not work on 2018 and up, so the only fix is the $1800 dealership fix. I guess enough people didn't call corporate?

I agree this is the best solution to the weak factory IBC. I installed this in my truck about 3 years ago and never looked back. It took about 30 mins to install with the adapter plate and has 100% more control and adjustability compared to the factory controller. Also for the price with the plug and play harness adapter you can’t go wrong.

Are you able to adjust the Tekonsha P3 via the vehicle setting like the factory brake controller or does everything adjust through the Tekonsha P3? Either way the factory brake controller is junk. I have had mine at the dealership 3-4 for the factory brake controller and it still does not function properly.

The factory controller completely goes away and the P3 goes in its place with the mounting plate. You can set your preferred braking power according to the load you are towing and it has a booster setting that automatically kicks in if it senses you brake more than a certain % of pressure on your brake pedal (for instance in an emergency stopping situation) here is a link with all of its features. https://www.tekonsha.com/product/90195_trailer-brake-control-proportional

Have hit a wall with the local Medford Lithia dealer & the National # (800-331-4331). Nobody will acknowledge the factory brake controller is defective yet they will “repair” the problem for $1,100, including $660 for a new controller which is an entirely new part # (89547-0C060) which replaces the original-09 or -10 version.
I’ve owned 5 Toyotas in my life and am so disappointed I could spit! At my wits end. Guess my only recourse is to file a complaint w NHTSA, hoping enough others do so to instigate an alert or recall order.

As of September 2024, both dealer & corporate will NOT acknowledge ANY problems w the original factory controller. I can’t force them to take responsibility! BTW did try to install an aftermarket Tekonsha but there was no place to plug into despite buying a wiring adapter. So much for corporate responsibility! Likely my last Toyota…

I think a lot of folks have called corporate (800-331-4331) who simply flipped me off by referring the matter back to Lithia Medford. What can be done when they STONEWALL this matter?

Requires a subscription fee. Can you be a little more specific, or is this 20-questions?

Get the IBC update and you should be fine. I got it from the dealer in 2018.
