Searched, found nothing on here. Have been roving google looking at reviews and images but they're all on jeeps and 4runners.

Has anybody ran one of the knucklebone spare tire carriers on a truck? Either the fold down or swing versions? Seems to be relatively inexpensive and pretty solid, just wanted to get some feedback on it if anyone has used one on their tundra. TIA

P.S. - not looking for any full bumper dual swing out expedition one/any other $2000ish dollar bumper solution, seen those, not in the cards for me currently.
P.p.s- have also seen the wilco and rigd swing out ones, not looking for those either

What are you looking for? You just eliminated all the well known options. Seems like this is the only one you're open to.

Detours is a small expedition/overland fab company. They typically make good stuff, but it's a very low volume operation with a small customer base.

My question to you is, why this carrier? Why not something that people have used and had good experiences with? Is this strictly a cost thing? Is there some feature that this tire carrier offers that the others don't?

Price is a factor, and some clearance issues, really intrigued by the dropdown vs the swingout. Mainly eliminating comments on the others because there is a plethora of information out there about them on trucks that I have found so wanted this thread to be about the knucklebone offering if anyone has run it on a truck, specifically a tundra (2nd-3rd gen)

I hate drop down stuff on the back. It always gets in the way. IMO, swing out or don't do it. I had a drop down bike carrier on a Subaru wagon once. It was a 4 bike and fully loaded. I used the drop down feature to open my lift gate. I went to grab a heavy cooler and it got hung up on one of the bike bar ends. BOOM my ice had created mud and my food was everywhere. Luckily it was all wrapped, but my half full container of potato salad had busted open and was in the ice/mud. Had to drive an hour down the mountain to get ice for the rest of the trip. I wanted to cut that rack up with a plasma cutter, but my friend convinced me to sell it instead of wasting it.

I would not want a drop down anything on the back of my truck either. The tailgate can be a pain enough towing certain trailers with something mounted on the tongue. Swing out would be great. I assume these mount to the trailer hitch somehow?

They do, similar to the wilco hitchgate and the rigd offering. They can be set with different degrees of drop straight back (figure would need 90° for tailgate clearance) and also one that drops/pivots to the side to set the tire on the ground and should still be able to open tailgate fully. Just not sure on clearance. And can be pulled off if beating around town and dont need the big spare on. Just kind of intrigued by it as a minimalist offering and seeing if anyone is running one on a full size truck

Full size spare... I wouldn't want that much weight so far behind the rear axle though. I'm really not sure why people do that. I do come from a desert race background though, so I'm not super knowledgeable to the other disciplines of off-road.

Yea, looking at spaces to put it to maximize space that I have. Currently have decked drawers in the bed, bamf low-pro rtt rack with tent, rotopax, shovel/axe on it. Wife and two kids will take up most of useable cab space, plus pelican and cooler in bed for miscellaneous camping supplies not in drawers and food. I guess I could still lay the spare flat on top of the drawers closest to cab and secure it then pack around it. Definitely dont want to put it on a roof rack on top of the cab haha

Their Ridgerunner swing out one is like $560ish and the knucklebone dropdown is around $300

I've known Detours personally for years. He ships his products world wide and has good customer feedback/reviews on his products.
He makes top notch stuff and stands behind his work. I wouldn't think twice about buying from him.

Probably gonna give him a call with a few questions about clearance on a couple of the models, really interested
