After 2 T100’s, 1 Tacoma, and on my 4th 4Runner, finally decided on a 4WD and went for the Tundra - beyond excited as the expectation is this will be my last truck purchase for years to come!

So my dilemma, how often to run the 4WD?!? I’ve read various articles and am still unsure, but confident this forum of experts will have some great feedback. ;) For what it’s worth, I’m a seasonal hunter/fisherman so I’m not in situations year round where I need to engage 4WD, and living in Houston, TX brutal heat, there’s not much weather related requirements where I’d have to kick it into 4WD.

What say you fine gentlemen (and ladies?)? My sincerest thanks in advance!

I don't really know the answer to your question but I'd say engage the 4wd every few months. DO NOT TURN on hard dry pavement while in 4wd. It will cause binding and potentially break something, either diff or CV. It's fine when going straight to operate it on pavement if only for a few seconds. Check the sun visor, it says what max speed is for engaging although I don't recommend engaging at max.
My very first truck was 2wd and the last 2wd truck I've had, going on at least 15 since then.

Thank God you got the fastest color! Nice looking truck congrats! I toss it in 4wd once a month just to make sure the solenoid is doing what it is supposed to. Make sure when you change your transfercase oil you use the Toyota straight 70w. It prevents the solenoid from sticking.

I would think the owners manual would state how often to engage the 4wd, I've just never read that part I guess.

I throw it in 4WD a couple times every month or so on a very straight stretch of road I’m on frequently.... leave it engaged for a few miles... and then shut it off. In the winters around me it gets plenty of use. Welcome to the world of never getting stuck again! I’d never buy a truck (or a tractor) that didn’t have 4WD.

You can get stuck with 4WD, but you will most likely be further off the road when you do get stuck.

I engage my 4WD whenever possible, wet grass, gravel and other loose surfaces, just not on dry pavement with turns.

    Congratulations, and great color choice!

Thanks to all for the help and kind words! And yes, I had to go with white for the extra HPs.

I’ve had my 2011 4runner for 8yrs now with no intent on getting rid of it (except for a 4WD), and sounds like this Tundra should serve all my off-road needs!

Dealers is fine tuning and polishing it up- picking her up tomorrow! First trip.... Galveston beach!

    (Adam, I’m in Friendswood, buddy)

Loving the Tundra.....uh....LOVE out there!!! If this is the kind of enthusiasm we’ve got here, I may start fading out of the Tacomaworld.com and T4R.org- ha!

Rest assured, all, I will be learning and modding from you guys this day forward.

    Eagerly looking forward to it!!

Run it in 4 wheel drive...............every now again. The Owner's manual says something like once a month. In my opinion that is only for when it is new and in the factory warranty period. Toyotas way of managing their warranty risk. My other Toyota, a T100, 4WD, I have literally gone 60,000 miles without engaging the transfer case and no problem going into 4WD.

Congrats on getting away from the pups and runnin' with the big dogs!!!
